The annual college entrance examination has just ended, and the middle school entrance examination is coming soon, followed by final examinations at all levels. Whenever there is an exam, there are always "a few joys and a few sorrows". In this issue, Sophie's father shares with you the poem of the famous Japanese nursery rhyme poet Kaneko Mirei: We are different, we are all great!
Living in the early 1900s, Kaneko Mirei was hailed by poet Hachijo Saijo as "a superstar among young nursery rhyme poets", and many nursery rhymes were selected into Japanese language textbooks. Unfortunately, God was jealous of the talent and died at the age of 26. She began writing at the age of 20, leaving the world with 512 poems, which shook the Japanese literary scene and attracted the world's attention.
"We're not the same, we're all great," from Kaneko Miri's nursery rhyme "I'm the Bird and the Bell."
The original text reads like this:
I spread my arms,
Nor can it fly in the sky,
Flying birds,
But you can't be like me,
Run fast on the ground.
I shake my body,
I can't shake the beautiful sound,
The bell that will ring,
I can sing a lot of songs.
Bells, birds, and me,
We're different, we're all great.
This is one of Jin Zi Meiling's masterpieces. "We're not the same, we're all great," she calls for "just be yourself." Everything in the world arises and coexists because they are different. People are different, but everyone has their own value.
The highlight of this nursery rhyme is the penultimate sentence. This sentence is the same as the title, but it changes the order of the words, from "I and the bird and the bell" to "the bell, the bird, and I", in the words of Yoshio Yazaki, a contemporary Japanese nursery rhyme poet and director of the Kaneko Mirei Memorial Museum, "I and you" become "you and me", it is no longer the thinking of our predecessors, and there is a perspective of "we are not the same, we are all great".
Another important point. That is to chant "can't do" and "don't know", such as "can't fly in the sky", "can't shake the beautiful sound"... The poet reminds us that we can't do anything at first, we don't know anything, but then we slowly learn, we slowly know. She made us realize that everyone has their own time and volume, and they are all incomparable perfect beings.
There are many versions of Jinzi Meiling's nursery rhymes in China, and here we recommend a picture book "Stars and Dandelions" by Nova Publishing House, which selects 15 poems by Jinzi Meiling, including "Me and the Bird and the Bell" and so on. The book was selected as the recommended book for the 2020 summer vacation of the national famous teachers, and was illustrated by Noriko Ueno, a famous Japanese picture book author and author of "Cute Little Brother Mouse", with light and light colors, very beautiful and full of emotions.
Borrowing from the translator of this book, Wei Wen, I hope that children who read these poems can learn to think like Jin Zi Mei Ling, to look at our daily life and our world gently.
