On August 27, 2021, Unit 2 (APR1400, 1400 MWe) of the Barakah nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates reached critical condition for the first time.
A total of four units have been constructed at the Plaka Nuclear Power Plant, and Unit 1 was connected to the grid in August 2020 and reached full power in December. In March 2021, Hamadal-Kaabi, vice chairman of the UAE's Federal Nuclear Authority (FANR), said that Plaka Units 3 and 4 were 94% and 87% complete, respectively, and had submitted an application for an operating permit, but did not disclose when the permit was issued.
