The story takes place in 2011 in the small town of Empeer in northwestern Nevaa, where the protagonist Fern, who is in her 60s, loses everything in the Great Depression and stuffs all her belongings into a van and becomes a modern American nomad.

Vern could actually choose to end her wandering life. One day, after finishing her work, she went to a sporting goods store to escape the cold, where Fern met a friend, who warmly invited her to live with her, but Fern declined the invitation of her friend.

Fern met the warm and kind Linda at Amazon. May, they work together, play puzzles together, share life together. During their conversation, we learned that Linda had been working since she was 12 years old, but when she lost her job, she found that her Social Security benefits were only $550, and Linda began her own wandering life.

Fern meets Swankey, Dave, and Bob at the camp, where she spends a short but happy life until they hit the road again. Fern hadn't thought of a way to go, she chatted with Swankie, who was staying at the camp, and it turned out that Swanki had lung cancer and was running out of time, and she didn't want to spend the rest of her days in the hospital, so she decided to give all her belongings to those in need and then go to the end of her life.

She and Linda work as RV camp stewards in the small town of Wall, South Dakota, touring Badlands National Park, drinking and talking in bars; working as a cook at a fast-food restaurant at Wall's Store with Dave, and dating under dinosaur models on the edge of town.

But Linda travels to Arizona to build her own house, and Dave chooses to return to the family. Dave had sincerely invited Fern to live with him, but she hesitated and refused. Fern arrives in Nebraska to harvest beetroot, and the huge pile of beets makes her smaller and smaller, and she is once again alone.

Later, Vern's motorhome broke down and needed to be repaired, and he had to ask his sister for help, and her sister hoped that she could stay and live together, and Vern was a little shaken. But the disagreement of the three views of the concept made Fern more and more uncomfortable in this home. Eventually, Fern took the money he borrowed from his sister and repaired the motorhome, although the repairman repeatedly told her that the repair fee was enough for her to buy a new car.

Fern's figure gradually walked away, like a person with no past and no future. She couldn't walk into other people's lives, and no one else could participate in her life, and Fern could only walk alone in this land, unable to stay. But Vern's heart was content, and though she had always been on the road, she was always with home.
The film's images are lonely and romantic: empty wilderness, roaring cliffs, the afterglow of the setting sun, Fern's figure melts into the landscape, without abruptness, just like she has nowhere to rely on in this land, but everywhere.
The film also put on a free coat for those who had to go on the road. Some people say that "life is not only about the present, but also about poetry and far away", but this distant life does not necessarily represent simplicity and freedom, but may also be poverty and loneliness.
In the film, except for the lead actor McDormand, most of the other participants are real American nomads, who are sad and sweet memories, embark on a lonely wandering road, looking forward to seeing something on the road.
