The scientific name Calluna vulgaris broom heather refers to a plant of the genus Broom heather in the rhododendron family, alias "Scottish heather". It is a slow-growing evergreen shrub that can grow to 20 to 50 cm tall, or as little as 1 m or more, and is widespread in Europe and Asia Minor, growing mainly on acidic soils with abundant sunlight and moderate shade.

The genus Heather is often confused with its congener family, the Cox heather genus, which is dominated by lobes of heather's calyx that cover the petals, while the petals of Heather in turn cover the sepals.

Calluna, the scientific name of broom heather, is derived from the Greek word meaning "sweeping", which means the plant used to make brooms, so it is translated as "broom heather" in Chinese. The English language has two titles for heather flowers, "Heath" and "Heather", and the "Heather" actually refers to the broom heather.

The broom heather is Norway's national flower and an important symbol of Scotland.
