(Fight against COVID-19) The Director of Innovation and Technology of the HKSAR Government inspected a number of local anti-epidemic technology research and development

Hong Kong, May 3 (Xinhua) -- The Director-General of the Innovation and Technology Commission (I&T Department) of the Hong Kong SAR Government, Mr Poon Ting-ting, recently visited different universities and start-ups to meet with research teams to learn about the research and development and application of local anti-epidemic technology products.

It is reported that in March 2020, the IIT launched a special call for the "Public Institutions Trial Scheme" project, and approved 63 projects to respond to the new crown epidemic in the same year. The 57 local public institutions participating in the trial provided the trial site and the actual operating environment to the applicant institutions to assist in the implementation of scientific research results as soon as possible.

On 27 April, Poon visited InnoHub, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), which provides co-creation workspaces for start-ups, to meet and network with three polyU research teams to learn about their research findings and applications, as well as the University's support for start-ups. The inventions of these three teams are all related to the fight against the epidemic, including poly-core antibacterial and antiviral coatings, which are non-toxic and environmentally friendly coatings that can kill 99% of common bacteria and viruses, and their efficacy can be maintained for up to 6 months, which can be used for disinfection, pollution control and epidemic prevention on different equipment; new three-dimensional printing materials that can kill the new crown virus can be made into equipment that requires frequent contact, such as door handles, lift buttons, etc., to reduce the risk of virus transmission; portable new crown virus nucleic acid detector, which can detect human and environmental samples, Its sensitivity and specificity can reach 100%, which can improve personal health and environmental hygiene management.

PolyU said that at present, poly core TM and 3D printing materials have been commercialized and adopted by different institutions and enterprises.

On 29 April and 3 May, Poon Ting-ting also inspected the trial status of three anti-epidemic technology programmes specially solicited for funding under the Public Institutions Trial Scheme:

(1) The air purification device developed by Yaxian Technology Co., Ltd. combines a variety of high-end air purification technologies, including ionic silver, photocatalytic oxidation, ultraviolet and plasma disinfection technology, and air purification devices with photocatalytic oxidation technology;

(2) City University of Hong Kong develops a rapid virus protection system for hospital patients. The system uses ventilation hoods for individual patients, creating a negative pressure environment that separates COVID-19 patients from other patients and medical staff, reducing the risk of airborne transmission. The system has been clinically tested in the 24-hour outpatient and emergency department of Hong Kong Yi Hospital since February this year, and the data shows that the new system is effective in reducing the risk of cross-infection in the emergency room. Due to the simple setting of the system, it can be assembled in a short period of time, and it is believed that it can be widely used in hospitals and elderly homes and other places in the future;

(3) Elite Power Technology Co., Ltd. for the indoor environment and the disinfection of mobile robots, the main disinfection functions include multi-angle spraying or spraying, covering all locations in the room, including furniture surfaces or wall corners, the robot also has automatic obstacle avoidance and navigation functions. The project was tested at the Hong Kong Science Park, and the person in charge expressed satisfaction with the efficiency of the robot.

Poon Ting said that the I&T Department will continue to provide subsidies to organisations in the areas of R&D and application of technology to support them in the implementation of their scientific research achievements, while supporting the community to continue to fight the epidemic and allow the public to resume normal life as soon as possible.
