Ptolemy mentioned a people called the "Serbs" in his Geographical Guide of the 2nd century AD,

But it's not certain if this refers to the ancestors of modern Serbs.

The earliest information about the Serbs dates back to the end of the 6th century, when they were vassals of the Avars and later customers of the Byzantine Emperor Heraclius.

To drive the Avars and Bulgarians back to the east, Heraclius formed an alliance with several Slavic tribes that originated in the northeastern Carpathians.

Under the patronage of Byzantium, the Slavs settled extensively in the Balkans, extending south to the Aegean Sea and even settling in parts of Asia Minor.
