Radio amateurs respond to earthquakes in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Bosnia and Herzegovina).

Greg Mossop G0DUB, Emergency Communications Coordinator for IARU 1, reports on amateur radio response to the April 22 earthquake that struck Bosnia and Herzegovina (Bosnia and Herzegovina).

He wrote on the IARU-R1 website:

At 21:07 GMT on April 22, an earthquake of magnitude 5.7 on the Richter scale struck about 45 kilometers southwest of the city of Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but was felt in a wider area, including Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro.

Unfortunately, the earthquake has reportedly killed one person and injured many others.

5 minutes after the earthquake, the emergency communications service for ARAuBiH (RMZO) was activated.

According to their plan, three teams from the local radio club were mobilized and a network was built using existing VHF repeaters and a portable cross-band unit. A digital connection is also established between Sarajevo and Zenica E70ARA via Winlink, and the condition report is delivered in IARU message format.

Because aftershocks can damage buildings that have been weakened by the first quake, the emergency network will remain active until the danger passes. In addition to the many frequencies and repeaters of VHF/UHF, the following HF frequencies will be used:

3.612MHz LSB voice

3.612MHz USB number

7.125MHz LSB voice

7.125MHz USB digital
