However, it is rumored that after several days of continuous torture, the continuous dripping droplets will fester the skin on the forehead, eventually breaking through the skull.
In fact, relying on small water droplets alone cannot make the skin ulcerate, because the regeneration ability of the skin stratum corneum is very strong, and such a small range of soaking can hardly cause harm.
The real horror of water dripping is mental torture: before these small drops of water penetrate the skin, people are already insane.
In order to verify the authenticity of this punishment, in 2005, several creators of the American popular science TV show Mythbusters (Rumor Terminator) reproduced the entire set of torture devices and personally felt a dripping water torture.

Some speculate that this feeling of oppression comes from the "third eye" in the brain, the pineal gland [1-3].
The pineal gland, located in the center of the brow, is responsible for secreting melatonin, a hormone that helps us sleep.
Greek paleontologists have found that there is a degenerated third eye (scientific name cranial parietal eye) in the center of the frontal bone of the large pangolin, and since then, the "third eye" of fish, amphibians and other animals has been found, which corresponds to the pineal gland of humans.
It is called "eye" because in vertebrates the structure of this area is very similar to that of the retina [1-3].
The human pineal gland begins to atrophy at the age of 7 years, but there is still a potential photoreceptor structure in it, which is why the feeling of oppression occurs at the center of the finger eyebrow, and the scientific name is "non-ophthalmic vision" [1,2].
The next explanation may have a little mystical overtones. The famous philosopher Descartes believed that the pineal gland was the connection between the soul and the body, and called it the "seat of the soul" [3,4]. The reason why the dripping water punishment is unbearable is precisely because the water droplets continuously stimulate the eyebrows, affect the pineal gland, and cause mental collapse.
The real cause of the mental disorder may be more consistent with the explanation below.

Stimulated by negative emotions such as panic and anxiety, the heart rhythm will increase, blood vessels will contract, blood pressure will rise, and a substance called "catecholamine" will increase, which may induce acute heart failure [7].
