Promote the dissemination, exchange and development of local culture and art in Lanzhou, and enrich the cultural life of the masses.

"Dunhuang Ode to Mercy" can be described as a thousand-year-old song that sang Dunhuang, and Tan Dun also made a precise interpretation of his own work: "'Ode to Mercy' tries to turn Dunhuang's murals into sounds, so that we can hear Dunhuang. When we look back at history and Chinese culture, we can see that we have experienced so many vicissitudes and can find a little spiritual strength in it. Hosted by the Lanzhou Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism and hosted by the Lanzhou Grand Theatre, the 2020 Lanzhou Huimin performance, "Dunhuang Ode to Mercy", will be staged at 8:00 p.m. every night on December 26-27, 2020 at the Lanzhou Concert Hall. This concert specially invited internationally renowned composers and conductors Tan Dun to join hands with well-known baritone Wang Yunpeng and Zhang Xiaomeng; mezzo-soprano Dong Fang and Wu Hongni; tenor Wang Chuanyue; sopranos Huang Ying and Xu Lei; original ecological soprano Ze Renyangjin; original ecological bass hasbargen and Dunhuang dance rebound pipa Chen Yining to perform together with the Lanzhou Symphony Orchestra and the Lanzhou Concert Hall Choir.

"Dunhuang Ode to Mercy" is a fusion of national, classical, two-hour-long giant stage music written for soloists, choruses and symphony orchestras, which can be described as magnificent and far-reaching, it is like a thousand-year-old dream, embracing human beings who have endured hardships, giving us comfort and hope. Previously, "Dunhuang Ode to Mercy" had premiered in Europe and Australia, and the venue was full, and when it premiered in Germany, more than 1,800 spectators stood up to pay tribute to the music masters from China and around the world, and the thunderous applause and cheers lasted for fifteen minutes. Artists of different nationalities, different races, and different faiths gathered together to sing the Heart Sutra with Chinese together, which was shocking.

There's "Ode to Joy" in the west, and "Ode to Mercy" in the east.

Two odes in unison

"Ode to Dunhuang Mercy" recreates the musical heritage hidden in the cave murals of a thousand years ago, dissolves and crosses to today's stage, through the world's music academies, choirs and symphony orchestras, which are institutional sound bridges, playing Dunhuang music that carries the faith, compassion and wishes for the future of the nation, conveys chinese culture about life and life reflections, and is a real "Oriental Symphony" that leads Chinese culture to the world. The Asian premiere of such an extraordinary masterpiece has shaken the music world, and some music critics have commented: there is "Ode to Joy" in the west and "Ode to Mercy" in the east, the two odes drive together, ancient and modern meet, boundaries dissolve, and people's hearts and minds are connected.

A major feature of "Dunhuang Ode to Mercy" is that it shows the culture of the East with Western music, ancient Oriental instruments and modern Western instruments sound in unison, not only that, at the performance site can also see the rebound pipa, Xiqin and other ancient instruments restored in the Dunhuang murals, and the traditional Chinese musical instruments such as bowls, wooden fish, and yingquan are interspersed in the music, with full layers and magnificent waves, which produce unique resonance, and many natural elements are more Zen.

The division of culture is in the hands of music masters, creating a unique landscape that has never been seen before, showing the vastness of the sea. Composer Tan Dun borrowed a lot of Tang music in the "Ode to Mercy", showing the audience a picture of the Tang Dynasty, allowing the audience to travel with the music on the "Silk Road" and taste the style of the great power of the Tang Dynasty's artistic heyday on this ancient road full of Western characteristics.

On May 23, 2018, Dunhuang Ode to Mercy premiered at the prestigious Dresden Music Festival. When Tan Dun finished the last note, more than 1,800 spectators suddenly stood up, thunderous applause and cheers for fifteen minutes, realizing the export of Chinese culture and art.

"Dunhuang Ode to Mercy" is a musical masterpiece created by Mr. Tan Dun over a period of five years, inspired by the Dunhuang Grottoes murals, the whole text is based on the dunhuang mural story, the ancient music, musical instruments and musicians in the Dunhuang murals are restored, and expressed in the form of a symphony orchestra and a chorus, which is divided into six acts: "Under the Bodhi Tree", "Nine Colored Deer", "Thousand Hands and Thousand Eyes", "Zen Garden", "Heart Sutra" and "Nirvana". Each scene contains a profound philosophy, using music to dialogue with culture, history and heart, guiding people to be good, "people and all things should be harmonious, people and sentient beings should love", advocating integrity, equality, dedication, compassion... In the process of creation, Tan Dun rewrote and rearranged many details in the story of the mural, refining the human nature of the characters in the play.

Mr. Tan Dun said in an interview: "The most important thing for Chinese culture to share with the world is to have a spiritual platform and a bridge of faith. Traditional Chinese culture is very appealing, such as the belief in compassion and kindness, which can be found in many other cultures. My greatest wish in creating Dunhuang Ode to Mercy is that there will be no war and that everyone will be inspired to pursue our common goal, love nature, and love human beings themselves. ”

For best results, "pristine" singers are also invited to intersperse Sanskrit chanting, so that all primitive, precious, and potentially forgotten cultural lifelines can be transmitted. Through the six-act story, the universal value "love and peace" is conveyed, and the self-realization and epiphany shown through the plot and characters bring spiritual enrichment to the audience.

No matter where in the world, the understanding and sympathy for human suffering, the praise for kindness and compassion, and the ultimate reflection on life expressed in Dunhuang Ode to Mercy are universal.

Tan Dun:

"This work is a promise to a kind, compassionate mass that has survived the pressure, a promise to one's own culture, to one's faith, to one's ancestors."

"I put my ideal of life into dunhuang Ode to Mercy, which is the most important work in my life!"

Fan Jinshi (Honorary President of Dunhuang Research Institute):

Eight years ago in Dunhuang, Tan Dun and I joked, can you turn the Dunhuang murals into sounds? Unexpectedly, he actually did this, and did it. The Buddhists say compassion, and those who do not believe in Buddha also say compassion, so what is compassion? Compassion is to make people get wisdom, compassion is to liberate people from suffering, and compassion is to talk about the equality of all sentient beings and save all sentient beings. "Dunhuang Ode to Mercy" connects everyone together through music, and I was deeply moved after listening to it.

Yi Zhongtian (Scholar):

After listening to Tan Dun's "Ode to Dunhuang And Mercy", I deeply felt that this magnificent musical work belonged to all mankind. I have always believed that all human beings have common values, such as the pursuit and affirmation of love and goodness. This common value, regardless of race, regardless of region, regardless of era, regardless of country, is commonly owned and recognized by human civilization. This work of Tan Dun is the artistic presentation of the common values of mankind, which is its great significance. Congratulations Tan Dun!

Yu Qiuyu (Scholar):

Tan Dun's dissemination of Chinese culture is not to export an existing antiquity, but to show a completely new creation. He is already the most avant-garde music explorer in the contemporary world, but in the depths of his music, people can always find the oriental natural sounds of thousands of years ago. Tan Dun let the world understand that although Chinese culture has a long history, its life base is always ahead.

Dresden Daily News:

"Dunhuang Ode to Mercy" is like a movie that can be listened to, and the Chinese story is like a storm that shakes everyone's heart.

The Voice of Bach, UK:

"Dunhuang Ode to Mercy" is an absolutely unforgettable dramatic experience... The singer's emotional singing and the composer's own straightforward and chest-bound script allow the spirit of Dunhuang and the reincarnation of life to be integrated and presented in the same night.

Dudamel, Music Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra:

"'Ode to Dunhuang Mercy' allows people to have a deep understanding of the East and a deep communication of spiritual beliefs between people, countries and nations, and ethnic groups, and it makes the East and the West our common home today, opening up a heard Silk Road."
