"Pokémon Go" game developer Niantic has announced a new AR game "Peridot", saying that it is closer to the real AR than any original project. But the game is like a combination of Pokémon Go and Tamagotchi, with elements of reality and AR added to it.
According to Niantic veteran game producer Ziah Fogel, as Niantic's original casual IP work, the game will include a variety of fantasy creatures with different appearance characteristics, which are now in danger of extinction, and players can contact and interact with these fantasy creatures, cultivate their own "Peridot", guard their continuous growth, and discover the beautiful side of the world together.
Niantic's Pokémon Go, launched in 2016, is more of an LBE game, far from the true arboreal gameplay. Niantic has been incorporating AR elements into Pokémon Go for years, but LBE gameplay remains its foundation. But Niantic's long-term goal is true AR. Therefore, the latest game "Peridot" will be further tilted towards AR features.
Although no specific AR technology has been made public, the game's trailer suggests that Peridot can detect geometry in scenes and potentially use occlusion and light estimation to more realistically integrate in-game creatures into real-world views, and the game seems to be able to identify common real-world objects, such as real dogs. But the trailer for Pokémon Go hinted at a similar feature, but it turned out to be a gimmick.
