WU Tong, WEF Greater China: Advanced technology and large-scale application are important standards for lighthouse factories| the first Bay Area Digital Intelligence Forum

At the "Digital Innovation, Intelligent Leadership" 2021 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (Foshan) Digital Intelligent Transformation Summit Forum held on the 18th, Wu Tong, head of the advanced manufacturing business of the World Economic Forum in Greater China, introduced the global lighthouse factory network. The "Lighthouse Factory", initiated by the World Economic Forum, represents the forefront of digitalization of the global manufacturing industry.

Since 2019, the World Economic Forum and McKinsey have selected and certified exemplary "lighthouse factories" from thousands of factories around the world, bringing a total of 69 worldwide so far.

What are the conditions or levels to be selected as a lighthouse factory? How will such a network of factories function? In his speech, Wu Tong highlighted the issues of concern to the industry.

The following is the main content of Wu Tong's speech:

I'm from the World Economic Forum and the Lighthouse Factory is one of the projects I'm in charge of. The Global Lighthouse Factory Project began in 2018, a year when emerging technologies in the manufacturing industry exploded, and the direction of digital transformation has been recognized by many industries.

Academician Zhou Ji of the Chinese Academy of Engineering mentioned in his speech that industry needs to be respected. I agree with that. Today, while various industries are experimenting with various technologies and paths, not all industries have achieved results.

We hope that in various segments, factories with advanced technologies and large-scale benefits in this field will be selected as "lighthouses" to provide guidance and direction for the digital transformation of the manufacturing industry and even across industries. As of March this year, there were a total of 69 lighthouse factories around the world, and they laid out the technology of the fourth industrial revolution on a large scale, including companies such as Foxconn and Midea. It is foreseeable that the network of lighthouse factories will become more and more extensive in the future.

What is of common concern to all walks of life in government and enterprise is what kind of conditions or levels can be selected as lighthouse factories? The answer can be said: there are no standards, there are standards.

There is no standard, and in fact, it is related to the mechanism of lighthouse selection. The most important part of the lighthouse selection mechanism is the expert jury, which is composed of about 25 experts randomly selected from the global expert resource pool of the forum, which is an independent and neutral jury that votes to determine the final selection of the lighthouse factory. Each expert has their own standards based on different backgrounds. So there is no very clear standard for the time being.

At the same time, why is there a standard? After years of projects and selections, I think there are two points that are very important and are also very concerned by many experts, advanced technology and large-scale application capabilities.

First, the advanced nature of technology is the most important basis for expert review. Second, we call it scale benefits, and we expect these advanced technologies to be verified by time and demonstrated by experience, and to get tangible scale benefits in operational data or financial data. Therefore, the first is advanced technology, and the second has large-scale applications, including the generation of scale benefits.

We found that the factories selected for the lighthouse factory network have significantly improved in various dimensions, such as factory operation, quality management, research and development, delivery rate, research and development speed, cost, etc.

The overall project name is called "Global Lighthouse Factory Network", not called the Global Lighthouse Factory Selection, because the selection is only an entrance to our project, a beginning, we look forward to the excellent factories through the selection to join our network process, in the network to carry out business dimensions, technical dimensions, engineering dimensions and other various interactive exchanges, to better promote the development of the entire industry's digital manufacturing industry, which is the original intention of our project.

Over the past 4 years since the project was run, it has gained a relatively good reputation in the industry and has also been recognized by the industry. It is expected that more foshan high-quality manufacturing industry will join in the future, jointly promote the development of Foshan's high-quality manufacturing industry, and finally realize the world's manufacturing to see China, And China's manufacturing to see Foshan.
