Characters from the second period

Du Zhengxian

Not long ago, the final evaluation results of the "Chinese Archaeological Oscar" in 2021 of the top ten new archaeological discoveries in China were announced, setting off a hot discussion. Every major discovery is not a plucked dig, but a fruitful result of years or even generations of people sleeping in the open and seeking scientific knowledge. Nowadays, more and more fresh blood is flowing into the cause of Chinese archaeology.

"Strive to build archaeology with Chinese characteristics, Chinese style and Chinese style", on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of modern Chinese archaeology in 2021, General Secretary Xi Jinping made important instructions on national archaeological capacity building and discipline construction. Led by Professor Du Zhengxian, the first batch of provincial special experts and famous archaeologists in Zhejiang Province, the first archaeology department in the province was established in August 2021 at Zhejiang University University College, and not long ago, the school was approved to add a new undergraduate major in archaeology will be officially enrolled this year.

Poetically reconstruct history with a discipline. What exactly can archaeology learn? Where do the job prospects of the so-called unpopular disciplines go? Du Zhengxian, head of the school's archaeology department and "archeological prodigy", told his story.

An "three-span" archaeologist

Participated in more than 60 archaeological excavations, excavated thousands of cultural relics, published more than 30 academic papers in domestic and foreign journals, edited and published four books, and single-handedly occupied five "Annual Top Ten Archaeological Discoveries", Du Zhengxian, who was called "the wizard of the archaeological world" by his peers, can be described as a legend. And the path of practice behind the legend is always unexpected.

Recalling the construction of the Confucius Temple, a lot of work seems to be unable to play with the eight poles of archaeology, Du Zhengxian frankly said: "I hope that through solid and comprehensive study, our students will not only do the work of cultural relics and archaeology, but also have comprehensive ability to adapt to the current changeable society." ”

Is a wizard is also an all-rounder, from the Institute of Archaeology to the Institute of Cultural Protection and then to the museum, Du Zhengxian experienced the "three spans" of the archaeological community, and now, from the front line of archaeological practice to the front line of archaeological education, Du Zhengxian ushered in his fourth span in the field of archaeology in colleges and universities, he sighed: "To the city college to build archaeology majors, continue to engage in my favorite career, it is really a good opportunity for me." ”

"When I come to City College, I will tell my students everything I have experienced in my life." In the world of archaeology, man and history are separated only by sand. With the reverence for archaeology, Du Zhengxian excavated a lot of wealth left to us by history, and also wanted to tell these ancient stories to more people, and dedicate his love for archaeology to college education.

"Archeological wizard" and his archaeological dreams

"There are still very few colleges and universities in the country that have set up archaeology majors, and in my opinion, the determination of the city academy to set up archaeology majors is amazing." Under the gaze of Du Zhengxian, the archaeology major has introduced more than ten teachers, purchased a large number of advanced precision instruments and initially completed the construction of professional classrooms and discipline teams in just a few months. "Our equipment has certain advantages over the archaeology majors of many colleges and universities, and we have all the equipment required by the state for archaeological excavation qualification units in one step."

"After I came to the city courtyard, I felt that from the leader to every teacher is working hard, this is a good atmosphere. The whole school is in a positive and enterprising state from top to bottom. Du Zhengxian was amazed by the speed of the school's problem solving and serious attitude, which is also attracting more talents to Zhejiang City College, demonstrating the school's sincerity in establishing the Department of Archaeology.

A young profession has just started, and Du Zhengxian is also devoting himself to the construction of archaeology: "We refer to the disciplinary settings of many established schools, and we will invite well-known experts and scholars from all over the country to serve as the main speakers of the course on the history of archaeology." Du Zhengxian hopes that while cultivating the interests and hobbies of the students, du Zhengxian will also provide a benchmark for the teachers of the archaeology major, so that the archaeology major can develop for a long time.

The high mountains and blue waves of Zhejiang Province contain thousands of years of surging cultural context, a complete Neolithic sequence, a long history of ceramics and a thick and splendid urban culture, all of which are closely related to the characteristics of archaeology students cultivated by the City College. "Ceramic archaeology and urban archaeology are the characteristics of our archaeology major in City College, and I also hope that our students will add strength to ceramic archaeology and urban archaeology in Zhejiang after they go out."

The golden age of "unpopular" professions

"Why archaeology?" "What exactly is archaeology like?" In September this year, archaeology was officially enrolled!

Du Zhengxian has dealt with archaeology for most of his life, and under the immersion of a long time, he regards archaeology as a romantic discipline. "Archaeology is always full of mystery", cultural relics from the moment they are buried by time, archaeologists and years to rob the evidence of history, some with regret and frustration, some can uncover the mystery of history.

Archaeology seems to have always been an "unpopular" discipline in public perception, and "difficulty in employment" has also become a stereotype attached to archaeology. In the face of the most concerned professional employment issues at present, Du Zhengxian firmly replied: "Now is the golden period of archaeological employment. As more and more museums are located in the city, the number of recruits from archaeological institutes and cultural relics bureaus in various places is doubling, Du Zhengxian explained: "The development of archaeology can never keep up with the development of archaeology, the number of archaeology students in the country is very limited, and the number of archaeologists in the whole of Zhejiang Province may not exceed two hundred, so the country actually lacks archaeological talents." ”

"Gold" is not only a clearer employment environment, but also a leap forward in the archaeological working environment itself. With the development of the times, science and technology have transformed not only the productivity of the assembly line, but also changed countless archaeologists who are buried in the deep mountains and loess. "In the past, the conditions of archaeological work can be said to be drinking wind and eating soil, but now the working conditions of archaeology have been renewed." Du Zhengxian has done archaeological work for decades, and he has personally experienced the great changes brought about by social development: "For example, when sanxingdui was excavated recently, the whole greenhouse was very well built, and the conditions have been completely improved. ”

"With a reverence for cultural relics, study archaeology in a down-to-earth manner." With the advent of the golden age of archaeology, Du Zhengxian still stood at the mouth of the tide and looked forward, and continued to branch out for archaeology with a sincere heart.
