WeChat cracked down on digital collection transactions, and a large number of public accounts were banned

On March 30, Interface News learned that Tencent WeChat began to ban the public account of the digital collection platform on a large scale.

WeChat cracked down on digital collection transactions, and a large number of public accounts were banned

It is reported that on March 29, a number of public accounts related to digital collections in the WeChat client were suddenly banned, involving more than ten platforms, all of which are small and medium-sized digital collection platforms, and head platforms such as Tencent Phantom Core were not affected.

According to incomplete statistics, public accounts including Art Meta Yuanyishu, One Point Number Collection, Guizang Meta universe, Painting Life Meta, Yuanben Space, Shenda Digital Collection, One Meta, Zero Earth, iBox and Nuofang Body have been banned.

It is reported that most of the platforms have been prompted to be "complained by users and reviewed by the platform, there is no legal license or license, publishing, disseminating or engaging in related business activities, and the account has been stopped". Some platforms are banned on suspicion of fraud.

At the same time, Interface News exclusively learned that in addition to the direct ban, WeChat officials have sent qualification review reminders to some digital collection platforms, requiring the platform to provide qualification certificates for engaging in relevant business activities, and the submission period is April 1, otherwise it will also face the risk of banning public accounts.

The official WeChat sent a letter reminder that reads, "After the platform test, your public account is suspected of having an NFT digital collection transaction business, and you need to provide the NFT digital collection transaction business qualification certificate." ”

Interface News asked the WeChat official for verification, and as of now the WeChat official has not responded.

This is the second time that WeChat has taken down the digital collection platform after the WeChat Mini Program removed the digital collection platform.

The popularity of digital collections begins in 2021, and this new concept stems from blockchain technology, which can provide rarity and proof of ownership for digital content, and is more known as "NFT" abroad. When developing domestically, in order to weaken the financial attributes of the NFT, it is more called the "digital collection".

As NFTs are hot around the world, Internet giants such as Ant Group, Tencent, and JD.com have all come down to release their own digital collections.

However, at the same time as the influx of large factories, many small and medium-sized platforms have also entered the field, and WeChat public accounts and WeChat communities have become an important camp for digital collections.

However, there are also regulatory hidden dangers after the popularity of digital collections, and the most core is the problem of "digital collection speculation", that is, whether digital collections can be traded in the end.

In this large-scale ban, according to the official qualification reminder of WeChat, WeChat detects the behavior of "NFT digital collection transaction", not the digital collection itself.

At present, the two largest digital collection platforms in China are Whale Detective under Ant Group and Phantom Core under Tencent PCG, both of which entered the digital collection in 2021, but neither of them involved in digital collection transactions, only digital collection distribution.

Taking Whale Detective as an example, in 2022, Whale Detective has opened several rounds to combat over-the-counter trading and speculation of digital collections, and emphasized that the platform does not support digital collection transactions. Only limited open gift function, requiring user real-name authentication and long-term holding.

But whale detective's crackdown is limited to the whale detective APP itself, while WeChat's crackdown is much more influential.

Since NFTs are new and newly popular, there is currently no relevant regulation on the direct supervision of digital collections in China. As for the digital collection trading qualifications and licenses required by WeChat, there is no directly related compliance license and qualification in China.

One of the digital art e-commerce platforms that received the official reminder from WeChat told Interface News that on the issue of the development of domestic digital collection compliance, the platform communicated with a large number of law firms and accounting firms, and believed that there were seven relevant license qualifications, and the platform has obtained the art business unit filing, the blockchain information service filing, the value-added telecommunications business license and the ICP filing, and other relevant qualifications have been applied.

How to make the development of digital collections recognized by platforms, collectors, copyright owners and regulators at the same time is the biggest problem in this field.
