Born in Kyoto Prefecture in 1927, he studied painting with his father at an early age.
He graduated from the Kyoto Municipal School of Fine Arts and Crafts in 1944.
He graduated from the Japanese Painting Department of the Tokyo Fine Arts School in 1949.
He was awarded the Grand Prix des Arts in 1973 and the Minister of Education Award in 1980.
In 1966, he became a professor at Tama Art University.
In 1988, he became a professor at Tokyo Yunshu University.
In 2003, he was awarded the Order of Japanese Culture. He has visited China many times, and was invited to lecture at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in China twice in 1983 and 1987, and was appointed honorary professor of the Central Academy of Fine Arts.
