Welcome to the new issue of Sophie's Dad Read. On the evening of March 21, the International Children's Book Federation (IBBY) announced the list of this year's "International Hans Christian Andersen Awards" at the 59th Bologna Children's Book Fair in Italy. The winner of the 2022 International Hans Christian Andersen Prize for Writers was Marie Oder Murall from France and the Illustrator Award was won by Susie Lee from South Korea.

Established in 1956 by the International Children's Book Alliance, the International Hans Christian Andersen Prize is internationally recognized as the highest honor in the field of children's literature and is known as the "Little Nobel Prize in Literature". The International Hans Christian Andersen Award is awarded every two years, and in 2016, Chinese writer Cao Wenxuan won the International Hans Christian Andersen Prize Writer Award, becoming the first Chinese writer to receive this honor.
Susie Lee, who won the Illustration Award, graduated from the Department of Western Painting at Seoul National University in 1996 and received a master's degree from camberwell School of Art in 2001. Her picture books Waves and Shadow were named "Picture Book of the Year" by The New York Times.
Last year, Susie Lee and Chinese writer Cao Wenxuan co-authored the picture book "Rain and Dew", which was published by Relay Press.
"Rain And Dew" tells the story of a girl who loves to draw, Yu Lu, and the canvas Left by a famous painter. At first, every picture the girl painted was melted by the canvas, and she painted one painting after another, but she never got the acceptance of the canvas. After a lost and regained experience, the girl finally got the approval of the canvas, which bloomed with beautiful self-portraits.
Through the conflict between the girl and the canvas, the story achieves the inner self-breakthrough of the genius painter. Those moments that really enjoy painting can paint the most beautiful self-portraits.
Susie Lee's rich composition and fresh decoral, coupled with the real fabric texture, change the thickness of the text and charcoal brushstrokes from the atmosphere, making the story more refreshing to read.
"Rain and Dew" won the Special Nomination Award in the Fiction Category at the 2021 Bologna Children's Book Fair in Italy.
Another picture book by Susie Lee, "Open This Little Book," was also published in China a few years ago. Interested parents can find these two books to enjoy everyone's artistic creation with their children.
