Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine has been unanimously condemned by the international community. The Highest Judicial Organ of the United Nations, the International Court of Justice in The Hague, yesterday ordered Russia to end the war immediately. Joan Donoghue, the president of the court, said Russia's military operations were causing numerous civilian casualties. Moscow must ensure that the armed groups it supports also comply with the order, she added.
The judges therefore supported Ukraine's urgent filing. The Court's mandate is to resolve conflicts between States as peacefully as possible, and while its judgements are binding, the Court does not have the means to enforce its decisions. The ruling now has once again increased international pressure on Moscow.
Today, the UN Secretary-General once again issued an urgent appeal to Russia: "More than 3 million Ukrainian refugees have been displaced, the Ukrainian people are in despair, they need peace." This is also the voice of the people of the world, and Russia must now end this war."
