U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres said on Monday that Russia's war against Ukraine was the "sword of Damocles" for the global economy, especially for developing countries facing soaring prices of food, fuel and fertilizer because their granaries were "bombed."

When Guterres says granaries, he means Ukraine. Russia and Ukraine account for more than half of the world's sunflower oil supply, while wheat accounts for 30 percent, he said.

Now, Ukraine has banned food exports, and Russia will ban food exports from today. This could leave those African countries at risk of food deprivation, as most import at least a third of their wheat from Russia and Ukraine, with 18 of them more than 50 percent.

Guterres said he would add $40 million from the U.N. emergency fund to deliver the food, water and medicine needed to Ukraine.

In addition, those Countries that have expressed assistance are urged to honour their commitments as soon as possible. Because of the $1.1 billion in aid appealed by the United Nations, only $219 million has been received so far. #Russia-Ukraine situation ##联合国 #
