Originating in Bogotá, Colombia, in the 1970s, this treatment promotes skin-to-skin contact between preterm/low-weight newborns placed on the chest of their mother or family members after birth to help premature babies maintain body temperature and promote early initiation of breastfeeding.
As a low-cost, easy-to-operate method of preterm infant care, KMC has been clinically and researched to be an effective intervention therapy to improve the survival rate of preterm/low birth weight infants after years of practice in both developed and developing countries, and was included by the World Health Organization as a "highly recommended" in the Guidelines for Interventions to Improve the Prognosis of Preterm Infants in 2015.
