Ukraine, the last barrier to NATO's eastward expansion, has become the focus of contention between NATO and Russia. As early as 2013, then Ukrainian pro-Russian President Yanukovych wanted to strengthen relations with Russia, which led to opposition from pro-European factions, and Yanukovych was eventually deposed. During this period, it would have been impossible without the operation of Europe and the United States.
Such an outcome is exactly what NATO wants, and once Ukraine leads to NATO, then Russia will be under the direct threat of NATO's military power, which is intolerable to Putin.

So Putin began to fight back. 2014 began to be unpeaceful. First came the Crimean crisis, and in March, Crimea adopted the Declaration of Independence. In April, pro-Russians in Donetsk, Ukraine, declared independence and surrendered to Russia. In May, the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts in eastern Ukraine declared their independence and became sovereign states.
On February 21, Putin signed a presidential decree declaring the independence of Don and Lu states.
At the same time, the Kiev side began shelling the two areas, and even crossed the border to destroy Russian posts. With russians accounting for about 30 percent in these two regions, how can putin, the political strongman, be indifferent to Ukraine's moves? So war was inevitable.
It is not so much the Russo-Ukrainian War as it is that Ukraine was sold by NATO. Regardless of the moral level, it is inherently self-interested between countries.
NATO competes with Russia
