The Ukrainian government said its forces shot down two Il-76 transport planes outside Kiev, each capable of carrying more than 100 paratroopers. These claims have not yet been confirmed, and no conclusive photos or videos have flowed out.
The Il-76 transport aircraft are about the same size as the American C-17 transport aircraft and can carry a large number of paratroopers into combat. If both Il-76 transport planes were shot down, it would easily lead to the death of more than 300 Russian soldiers.
The Russians are now engaged in fierce fighting with Ukrainian troops, who are trying to reinforce the scramble for the airfield. Rifles were also distributed to ukrainians.
