Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy insisted on the morning of the 26th that despite reports of fighting overnight, domestic forces took control of Kiev.
In a video address, Zelensky added that Ukraine controls "key points around the city."
He said: "We have succeeded in stopping the enemy's attack. We know that we are defending the future of our land and our children and grandchildren.
"Kiev and key areas are controlled by our military. The occupiers want to build their puppets in our capital. They didn't succeed.
He added that the Ukrainian people had "won the right to become members of the European Union" and that it would be a "pivotal moment of support".
Zelensky, who is still in Kiev, added that he hoped Hungary and Germany would "have the courage" to boycott Russia's use of the SWIFT interbank messaging system.
He concluded the statement by pleading with those who had fled Ukraine to come back and fight for their country.
President Zelensky added: "Everyone who can defend Ukraine abroad please do this." Every Ukrainian friend who wants to join Ukraine in defending the country, please come over and we will provide you with weapons.
