The protagonists of "The Age of Free Range" are a typical pair of "Chinese fathers and sons". In the 1980s, Jindou, who lived in a small town in Jiangsu and Zhejiang, was a "bear child" with a sharp temper in people's eyes. One day, his mother returned to his hometown because of an accident, leaving him and his father to live alone for three months.

Jindou himself is in a period of rebellion, doing everything against his father and school teacher. Jin Dou's father, Jin Agui, like most Chinese fathers, is not good at words and acts on his children in a hurry. During the three months of living together, the father and son had frequent conflicts, and the family was not at peace all day.

The summer in the town is hot and dry, and Jindou likes to hang out with his friends in the town, "shoot" everywhere with a slingshot, and ride his bicycle to the beach to play in the water. They also like to watch movies. Jindou's biggest wish is to let his father, who is a projectionist at the Chunfeng Town Cinema, screen "Shaolin Temple" for free for the children of the town. However, Jindou does not know that the town cinema is facing the crisis of closure, and his father is about to enter a desperate situation in life. Jindou is actually facing a desperate situation in life, he was expelled from school, and the conflict between father and son reached the extreme.

Nowadays, many families have "educational anxiety", and the "free range education" of many families in the 70s and 80s is already a very unfamiliar word in this era. "The Age of Free Range" uses the story between a father and son and the movie to lead the audience to recall the youth time that was once open, vigorous and free. After the film's trial screening, some viewers who have become parents said that "The Age of Free Range" not only reminds our generation of their youth, but also inspires us to think about the education of the next generation.
