For the first time, the United Nations has named the year after a single material

What is the United Nations International Year of Glass and what is its significance? In fact, for 60 years, the United Nations General Assembly has had the practice of recognizing international efforts and contributions to society in important areas by proclaiming the International Year of the United Nations, such as the Year of Light and Optical Technology in 2015 and the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements in 2019.

This is the first time that the United Nations has named a year with a single material, highlighting the indispensable importance of glass in many fields such as science and technology, economy, environment, culture and society.

According to reports, glass is one of the earliest man-made materials invented by mankind, widely used in construction, communications, transportation, life and health, new energy, aerospace, art and other fields, is a very important material in daily life and high-tech fields, and has played an important role in the history of human civilization and scientific and technological inventions.

For example, glass fiber optics have brought about a paradigm shift, triggering a global communications revolution; the development of glass optics and optoelectronics to expand human understanding of the universe; glass panels have supported solar cells and provided clean energy; glass fibers have strengthened wind power blades to reduce carbon emissions through carbon capture and carbon sequestration; touch-sensitive glass screens have produced smartphones into our lives; and bioglass can design and regenerate muscle tissue and solve hearing and dental problems The vitrification of hazardous waste improves the safety of nuclear energy and so on.

"This transparent enabling material underpins the development of many technologies and is an important medium for art, and its history is connected to the history of mankind." Jin Zhanping, vice chairman of the Chinese Ceramic Society, said.
