Referee expert: Szczesny deserves a yellow card, De Ligt does not handball

Live on February 14, 2019 In the 25th round of Serie A, Juve drew 1-1 away to Atalanta. However, there were some controversial penalties in the game, which was commented on by former Serie A referee Luca Marelli.

In the 31st minute, Kupmenas was given a one-handed chance when Juventus goalkeeper Szczesny struck out of the box, but his arm was suspected of touching the ball, and Muriel's empty shot was blocked by Bonucci. In the 44th minute, Boga burst into the left side of the penalty area with the ball and shot at goal, and Juve player De Ligt was suspected of handball when he fell to the ground to block. On both occasions the referee and VAR failed to award a foul, and Atlanta was unhappy, arguing that Szczesny should be sent off for a red card and that De Ligt should have awarded a penalty for handball.

But Luca Marelli believed that Szczesny had a clear dodge when handballing outside the box, and with two Juve defenders back in place, Cupfmenas could not be considered a clear scoring opportunity. Luca-Marelli said Szczesni probably deserved a yellow card for his rash attack, but it was by no means the red card Atlanta had hoped for.

As for De Ligt's suspected handball, Luca Marelli noted that De Ligt did raise his arm at the time, but the video replay from different angles made it clear that the football hit De Ligt's ribs instead of his arm, so it wasn't a penalty.
