Out of concern for their own health problems, consumers have begun to actively care about the health of their cognitive functions such as memory, concentration and psychological endurance. The field of cognitive function consumption has ushered in growth, not only the elderly population has put the maintenance of cognitive function first, but also the younger population has begun to seek to use supplements to maintain brain health. What are the trends in cognitive function supplements in 2022?

Strong sales of cognitive health products: Overall sales of cognitive health products increased by 59% in the mainstream U.S. supplement market, with half of both physical stores and e-commerce channels. Consumers tend to choose products that they approve of.

Significant growth in multivitamins: Multivitamins have been the biggest player in the supplement product space, with sales of products for women's cognitive health growing by 99 percent and male users up 186 percent. The multi-health benefits of multivitamins are the number one factor in attracting consumers.

Phosphatidylserine (PS) performed impressively: PS saw strong growth in cognitive health functional ingredients, with PS sales up 91% in 2021. The health effects of PS in maintaining cognitive function have been demonstrated in clinical trials, and its beneficial effects on athletic performance and skin health have also received attention.

Recognition of plant-based ingredients: Mushrooms, bacopa monnieri and other plant-based ingredients that contribute to cognitive health will continue to grow in the market in 2021.

There is room for growth, but the growth rate may slow down: Cognitive health supplements are still in their infancy, accounting for about 3% of total dietary supplement sales, and they will undoubtedly continue to sell well in 2022, but the growth prospects are unclear after that, and the growth rate may slow down.

Latest Trends for 2022: Effectively Improving The Star Ingredients of Cognition & Sleep & Exercise

On January 31, British biopharmaceutical company Altimmune announced that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a Phase 2 clinical trial of its obesity treatment drug pemvidutide.

Pemvidutide is a polypeptide-based glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1)/glucagon bi-receptor agonist. Glucagon is able to increase energy expenditure and promotes the conversion of white fat in the body that stores energy into brown fat that consumes energy. It has a synergistic effect with GLP-1 and is more effective in weight loss than GLP-1 receptor agonist monotherapy.

The results of the previously published Phase 1 study showed that subcutaneous injection of 1.8 mg of pemvidutide per week for 12 weeks significantly reduced the weight, liver fat and serum lipids of overweight and obese subjects.

The Phase 2 trial will enroll approximately 320 subjects with obesity or overweight people with at least one obesity-related complication. Subjects will be injected with 1.2 mg, 1.8 mg or 2.4 mg of pemvidutide or placebo per week for 48 weeks. The study is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2022 and the results of the trial are made public by the fourth quarter of 2022.

In addition to obesity, permvidutide clinical trials for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease are also active.
