Before the attack, the diplomat had no verbal communication with the attackers. Sources said the diplomat showed his diplomatic credentials at the time of the attack.

The Attacked South Korean diplomat reportedly had a suspected fractured nose and was taken to New York University Hospital, where he was in stable condition.

It was unclear whether the attack on South Korean diplomats was linked to hate crimes against people of Asian descent. Recently, there have been a number of random attacks against Asians in New York. On the 15th of last month, a 40-year-old Asian woman, Michelle Aylssa Go, was violently pushed off the tracks by 61-year-old suspect Simon Martial while waiting for a train at a subway platform, causing her to be killed by an oncoming train. Also last month, a 67-year-old woman of Asian descent surnamed Nguyen was suddenly attacked by a 51-year-old homeless man on the streets of Brooklyn, New York, and was hit hard in the face and head.
