It is understood the former black cat manager got the job on Wednesday, but he turned down the opportunity to return to the Stadium of Lights.

Keane coached Sunderland in 2006–08, but he will not coach Sunderland again

After Lee Johnson's departure, Keane was rumored to return to Sunderland at an alarming rate.

The former manager was sacked after an embarrassing 6-0 loss to Bolton, and Keane was considered his successor, leading Sunderland back to the title.

However, Sky Sports sources confirm that the Irishman is no longer considering the position after withdrawing from the race.

Keane is believed to have conducted two interviews with the club and even got the position on Wednesday.

But the 50-year-old is said to have turned down a chance to return to the coaching bench as he has been out of the coach's position for more than a decade.
