On February 10, the 72nd Berlin Film Festival opened. Gansu director Li Ruijun's work "Hidden in the Dust" will participate in the Competition for the Golden Bear Award as the only Chinese-language film shortlisted for the main competition unit.
It is worth mentioning that Li Ruijun became a Chinese director who has been shortlisted for the three major international film festivals with this film, and before that, he was shortlisted for the horizon unit of the 69th Venice International Film Festival in 2012 with "Tell Them, I Went with the White Crane", and in 2017, he was shortlisted for the attention unit of the 70th Cannes International Film Festival with "Passing the Future".
Shortlisted for the main competition unit of the Berlin Film Festival, director Li Ruijun will bring "Hidden in the Dust" and 17 excellent films that were also shortlisted to compete for the "Golden Bear".
It is understood that the 39-year-old director, screenwriter and producer Li Ruijun was born in Gaotai, Gansu, and his works are mostly related to the background of his hometown, and the realism style is strong. Since 2006, he has successively written and directed literary and artistic films such as "Summer Solstice", "Old Donkey's Head", "Tell Them, I Went by White Crane", "Home in a Place with Lush Water and Grass", "Passing through the Future" and so on.
Written and directed by Li Ruijun and starring Haiqing and Wu Renlin, "Hidden in the Dust and Smoke" tells the story of two lonely individuals abandoned by their respective families in the rural areas of Gansu Province, who are mixed with each other in the day-to-day cultivation. Wu Renlin and Haiqing jointly show the journey of a peasant couple from strange to familiar, from acquaintance to mutual observance. The film will be released in Chinese mainland on the 25th of this month.
"Hidden in the Dust" creates two "firsts"
In the film "Hidden in the Dust", director Li Ruijun created two "firsts" in his creative career.
Recently, he revealed to the media that "Hidden in the Dust" is a film with middle-aged people as the protagonist. The film takes the love of two middle-aged people who stay in their homeland as the starting point, focusing on how the hero and heroine know each other, know each other, love each other, and keep each other under special circumstances, which can be said to be the first film in his work with emotion as the main body.
Secondly, in the choice of actors, Li Ruijun chose for the first time in "Hidden in the Dust" to use professional actor Haiqing and ordinary actor Wu Renlin to star together. In this regard, Li Ruijun said that the role setting of the film is two middle-aged people working in the village, although it is a story of ordinary people, but it needs more delicate emotional expression.
Haiqing was chosen because the two had known each other for many years and had always hoped to have the opportunity to cooperate. After this script was completed, it was immediately in line with Haiqing.
For the casting of the male protagonist, Li Ruijun also considered hiring professional actors at the beginning, but because the filming needs to be divided into five seasons, and also has to experience life, so the actor schedule has become a big problem. The male protagonist in the film has a lot of physical labor, which is a great challenge for professional actors. Therefore, after communicating with professional actors without success, Wu Renlin, who has played supporting roles in Li Ruijun's directing works many times before, was selected as the male lead actor, who is also the uncle of Director Li Ruijun.
This year's Berlin Film Festival is back offline
The Berlinale is one of the three major film festivals in Europe (Berlin, Cannes, Venice). Last year, due to the epidemic moving online, this year's Berlin Film Festival returned to offline.
A total of 18 films from 15 countries were shortlisted for the main competition section of this year's Berlin Film Festival, of which 17 were world premieres and 7 were directed by female directors, while all the shortlisted films are almost focused on the present, telling stories that take place outside the city center, whether they are on the edge, in the countryside, or as the characters follow their journey away from the city.
The berlin film festival opened on February 10 at the Berlin Film Palace, followed by offline film screenings. From 17 to 20 February, films exhibited at the Berlinale will be ticketed to the public.
