In addition, the report also calculates the economic losses caused by overdose in the current year based on previous year's data, and estimates that the economic losses in this year will reach more than one trillion US dollars. Data show that in 2018, the number of people killed by drug overdose in the United States was two-thirds of what it is today, and the economic loss reached $696 billion, about 4.4 trillion yuan. Economic losses cover productivity loss due to premature death, health care and judicial costs, among others.

The report also pointed out that the increase in the number of deaths caused by drug overdose is directly related to the poor control of the epidemic in the United States and the economic downturn. During the worst of the covid-19 pandemic, 1 in 10 Americans started using drugs or ramped up their medications, the report said.
