Oculus Quest 2 Teardown: Is this the door to the Metaverse?

Meta previously released a financial report saying that reality Labs operating losses reached tens of billions of dollars, which was jokingly called by netizens: true ten billion subsidies.

This is the first time Meta announced the "meta-universe" performance, but many practitioners are not interested in its losses, but are curious about how much Quest 2 has sold. The disappointing result is that Meta still did not announce the sales of Quest 2 in this financial report.

Although Meta is silent about Quest 2 sales, third-party agencies predict that sales have already reached the tens of millions, covering many countries around the world.

In the face of Quest 2, many players have different questions, such as why is quest 2 so low? How does Quest 2 cost reduction? How do I repair a quest 2 if it's broken?

The famous American dismantling website iFixit recently disassembled Quest 2, and the process is as follows:

First, remove the 6 T2 screws under the foam pad of the headset to remove the plastic trim around the screen. There are then five screws to secure the front panel, and when the front panel is taken apart, it's clear how dense the Quest 2 is inside, with almost every inch of space stuffed with stuff.

At this point, iFixit wants to see an easy way to remove the battery, or at least disconnect the power, but sees nothing. It's a bad thing not to be able to replace the battery quickly, because after a long period of use of an electronic device like this, the battery needs to be replaced for a better experience.

iFixit found the battery cable according to the previous user's guide created on iFixit. To disconnect the battery, simply remove three screws and a metal bracket (see image above) and disconnect this cable here.

IPD adjustment mechanism: When two screens slide back and forth between their three positions, tiny gear movements can be observed. It's also one of the cost savings Oculus took to reach the $300 price point, which, while most people may not notice, won't get the perfect IPD adjustment for some users.

Battery removal: Secure the top of the headset with 6 Phillips screws. This is a lot of removal to replace the battery, but this position is not the best one.

There is a bracket around the speaker, followed by some delicate little metal clips that can remove the entire speaker after removing two black plastic pieces.

Fitting the speakers into the side brackets is a very clever design trick that allows the speakers to be made larger and brings the sound closer to the ear for better immersion.

Cameras can track movement without any external sensors, and TechCrunch's reporter Devin Coldeway got a very straightforward answer from Facebook's CTO a few years ago.

The basic answer boils down to:

They run the inertial measurement chips we see on motherboards at very high frequencies (hence the thermal paste there), rely heavily on Facebook machine learning and computer vision algorithms, and they spend a lot of time carefully tweaking the output of the entire system to closely match the older system that uses external sensors.

The screen is the same as the smartphone display, the unimportant parts are blacked out, and you can hardly see it under the correct reflection. This LCD differs from the original Quest headset, which has a slightly lower OLED panel resolution and a lower refresh rate.

The above is iFixit's teardown of Quest 2, and during the disassembly process, you can see the design of Quest 2 in order to put more devices inside and reduce the cost of the contract.

Quest 2 becoming one of the most mainstream VR headsets in the world is not all about its content, and the overall design of Quest 2 from the inside out shows The efforts that Meta has put into this machine. Quest 2 has been released for a year and a half now, during which time there have been many products that benchmark quest 2, and it is clear that the Quest 2 is still the peak of their expectations before facing many enemies.

After Meta announced the vigorous development of the "metaverse", quest 2 became the door to enter the "metacosm", in the VR world you can experience all the contents of the Meta "metacosm".

Although Quest 2 is already at its peak, Meta hasn't stopped. Before Facebook Connect 2021, the internet seemed to leak the rendering video of Oculus Quest Pro.

The leaked video came from a tweet by a user named Bastian, which contained four videos that looked like leaked videos for the Oculus Quest Pro headset. The headset looks exactly like the video that Andrew Bosworth, Facebook's vice president of VR/AR, revealed a few weeks ago.

The headset in the leaked video differs from the white casing of the Oculus Quest 2, showing a black Oculus Quest Pro that looks more like a pair of goggles.

But since then, there have been no news about Quest Pro, but you can believe that Quest can bring better hardware and a better VR experience.
