In Chengdu People's Park, there is a "Xinhai Qiubao Road Death Monument" built in 1913, the height of the monument is 31.86 meters, and the stele is engraved with railway tracks, steam train patterns and texts, although it has been mottled, it is still majestic. This was built by the Chuanlu Headquarters in order to commemorate the martyrs who died in the Road Preservation Movement.
The Road Protection Movement was an anti-imperialist patriotic movement in which the people of Sichuan defended their right of way in the late Qing Dynasty. In the 20th century, the people of Sichuan set up their own railways, the Qing government was under pressure from imperialism to confiscate the right of way, and in order to resist imperialism's plundering of China's railway sovereignty, the people of Sichuan established the Sichuan Baolu Comrades Association to fight back, and a vigorous road protection movement broke out. The Qing court sent the Hubei New Army to block it, causing Wuchang to be empty, laying the foundation for the wuchang uprising, the first battle of the Xinhai Revolution. The Baolu Movement is recognized by historians as the precursor of the Xinhai Revolution. "If there had been no uprising of the Sichuan Baolu Comrades' Association, the Wuchang Revolution might have been delayed by a year and a half", "The overwhelming people's strength of the people in the mountains and the sea will cause the Chinese revolution to precede", this is the high evaluation given by Sun Yat-sen and Zhu De to the Sichuan Baolu Movement. After the founding of New China, this monument was listed as a national key cultural relics protection and became a patriotic education base.
Less than 1,000 meters away from the Ginkgo Avenue opposite the Monument to the Death of Qiubao Road in Xinhai is the Sichuan Baolu Movement History Exhibition Hall, which is the Chengdu People's Park in order to meet the people's remembrance of martyrs, understand history and culture, and inherit red genes, built in 2006, and changed to chen in 2021. The exhibition hall is divided into two floors, a prologue hall, six main exhibition halls and a souvenir sales hall, with an exhibition area of about 780 square meters. The exhibition hall closely focuses on the "road construction", "road grabbing" and "road protection" of the railway as the core, mainly based on historical photos and physical reproductions, and vividly shows the vigorous road protection movement of that year in front of everyone. Looking at those yellowed cultural relics, people feel as if they have traveled to the Sichuan Road Preservation Movement that surged a hundred years ago, and think of the martyrs who exchanged blood and lives for our happy life today, and they can't help but be awe-inspired, excited, and emotional.
It is understood that the Sichuan Baolu Sports History Museum receives more than 100,000 visitors every year and nearly 100 visiting groups. Especially on qingming festivals, May Fourth Youth Day, "93" and other commemorative days, spontaneous visitors are even more numerous. "The exhibition hall not only allowed us to see the cultural relics, but also gave a history lesson that benefited a lot, which was a rare patriotic education," the visitors praised.
