Recently, 3-year-old girl Xiaoyuan (pseudonym) often squinted her eyes to see things, accompanied by her parents, went to Xiamen Eye Center Strabismus and Pediatric Ophthalmology Director, discipline leader Pan Meihua for treatment, a check of Xiaoyuan's eyes are already highly myopic.
"It's been almost a year since the child squinted at things, and when he asked, he said that looking at things would be blurry." Anxious parents told Pan Meihua. After detailed examination such as mydriasis refraction, it was determined that Xiaoyuan's eyes were already highly myopic, the left eye was 600 degrees, the right eye was 750 degrees, and the eye axis had grown significantly, which had exceeded the normal eyeball size of the 3-year-old child.
After careful questioning, Pan Meihua learned that when Xiaoyuan was 2 years old, her mother found that she always loved to frown and squint when she looked at things, but she thought that it was just a child's bad habit and did not care too much. It was not until Xiaoyuan was 3 years old when he went to kindergarten, under the kind reminder of the teacher, that her mother realized that Xiaoyuan may be short-sighted. The anxious parents quickly took the child to the Xiamen Eye Center for vision examination.
Looking at the guilty parents, Pan Meihua reminded them that the most urgent thing is to help Xiaoyuan scientifically control the process of myopia. She reminded parents that early vision screening can help parents detect eye diseases such as myopia in their children early and is very important. If parents find that their children like to squint at things, often frown and rub their eyes, blink frequently, see things very close, often pull the corners of their eyes or have the habit of tilting their heads and squinting at things, they must take their children to the regular hospital for detailed eye health examinations as soon as possible. Once the child is diagnosed with myopia, it is necessary to follow the doctor's instructions to control the child's myopia process in time to avoid aggravation and develop into high myopia.
High myopia is prone to a variety of pathological changes in the eye, such as blinding eye diseases such as retinal and macular lesions, retinal detachment, and macular fissures. Therefore, Pan Meihua recommends that patients with high myopia should have fundus examination at least 1-2 times a year to prevent the further development of fundus lesions and protect vision.
