The world's first! Sugi University of Technology alumni put on carbon fiber "coat" for the Winter Olympic torch "flying"

Do you know

The Winter Olympic torch "flying" is "wearing a coat"

And it is a coat made of carbon fiber

This "coat" is of very light quality

Only about 1/4 of steel

But the strength is 7 to 9 times that of steel

This "coat" is temperature-resistant and fire-resistant

800 °C, 900 °C can be

Head of the "Flying" Torch Project

It is the Southern Institute of Technology

Class of 2001 Composites and Engineering alumni

Lin Shengbing

On the evening of February 4, at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games, when the athletes held the "flying" torch and lit the main torch and planted it on the snowflake torch platform, rising above the main Olympic venue, the world boiled over it.

The world's first Winter Olympic torch made of carbon fiber composite materials "Flying" is impressive, the reporter learned from Nanjing University of Technology that the person in charge of the "Flying" torch project is lin Shengbing, an alumnus of the school's 2001 composite materials and engineering major and the general manager of the Shanghai Petrochemical Advanced Materials Innovation Research Institute.

In order to create the world's first carbon fiber torch, Lin Shengbing led the team to develop a carbon fiber torch shell in June 2020. How can carbon fiber composites withstand high temperature combustion of hydrogen flames at 800 °C? How to weave the inner and outer streamers of the torch into an irregular flowing shape with a delicate structure and shape with carbon fiber? In the face of these challenges, Lin Shengbing led the team to unite relevant universities and science and technology enterprises to carry out technical research, and successfully solved one difficulty after another.

"The quality of carbon fiber is only about 1/4 of that of steel, but the strength is 7 to 9 times that of steel." Lin Shengbing introduced that the R & D team used carbon fiber and resin composite materials to make the Olympic torch, which is the world's first.

In March 2021, the Winter Olympic torch "flying" entered the mass production stage. Shanghai Petrochemical took the lead in undertaking the mass production task of "flying" the torch. A total process integrating torch shell, inner streamer, combustion system, tinder lamp, terminal inspection and delivery of products was quickly established and operated in five major bases such as Shanghai, Beijing, Jiangsu, Guangdong and Hebei.

11 people formed a service support team, 13 people formed an assembly team, and Lin Shengbing was the person in charge. He coordinated with relevant units to ensure product quality and clarify the progress of mass production. In the end, the "Feiyang" torch sample passed the test of the Winter Olympic Organizing Committee and the third-party acceptance, and experts evaluated the "Feiyang" as having the characteristics of "light, solid and beautiful".

On the 8-day countdown to the opening of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, 1200 carbon fiber torches of the Winter Olympics were officially delivered to the Beijing Winter Olympic Organizing Committee. In January 2022, Lin Shengbing led his service support team and torch assembly team to Beijing to carry out hydrogen filling, quality inspection and component assembly of the Winter Olympic torch, and provide on-site service guarantee for the torch relay. From February 2 to 4, the Beijing Winter Olympic Torch, passed by about 1,200 torchbearers, lit the "main torch" of the National Stadium. On February 6, Lin Shengbing and the torch team successfully completed their mission and embarked on the high-speed railway back to Shanghai.

"For the first time in the history of the Olympic Games, our main torch adopts the "micro-fire" method, which fully embodies the concept of green environmental protection. Lin Shengbing said that the wonderful opening of the Beijing Winter Olympics perfectly demonstrated China's strong strength, and he will lead the team to continue to work hard to the future together.
