Sony is looking for new technology partners to assist Sony Mobility Inc., which launched in the spring of 2022, into the electric vehicle market. Sony executives shared the news with Reuters, saying their goal is to "cover the functional needs of transport machines and entertainment venues with the characteristics of the car."

Izumi Kawanishi, head of Sony's artificial intelligence machine division and soon to take over Sony Mobile, said what is happening to electric vehicles today is similar to the shift from mobile phones to smartphones with the help of information technology. Sony unveiled the Vision-S 02 electric SUV concept at the 2022 International Consumer Electronics Show, a successor to the Vision-S 01, both of which were built by Magna Steyr Magna Steyr of Austria, which has extensive experience in this area. While the concepts look ready for production, and the Vision-S 01 has already begun testing on public roads, it will require a huge investment to build the factory if Sony decides to move on. Sony isn't the only tech company looking to enter the ev market, as Apple, LG, Foxconn, Alibaba Group, Xiaomi and Huawei have already announced similar intentions. Electric cars are easier to build than traditional fuel-powered cars, and technological features such as autonomous driving, infotainment, and 5G connectivity are becoming increasingly important for modern cars, attracting newcomers to the game.
