In the men's 5,000m speed skating competition at the Beijing Winter Olympics, Sweden's Nils Van der Poul broke the Winter Olympic record with a time of 6:08.84 and won the gold medal.

This is also the second time that the record has been broken at the Winter Olympics. Earlier in the tournament, Dutch athlete Patrick Rust broke the record set by teammate Sven Cramer at the last Olympics with a time of 6:09.31.
