The Yue opera "Jade Hairpin" tells a love story with twists and turns. During the Ming Dynasty, the official Shangshu Li Tingfu paired his daughter Xiuying Xu with Yulin, the son of Wang Yu of Hanlin. Xiuying's cousin Gu Wenyou failed to propose marriage, and bought a matchmaker to steal the Li family heirloom jade hairpin, along with a forged love letter, and secretly placed it in the new house on the day of Xiuying's marriage. In Yulin, he suspected xiuying of being unchaste and insulted him in the cold.
