Pingshun Virgin Temple Song Yuan Ming and Qing Opera Inscription Examination

Pingshun County was originally Qingyangli in Lucheng County (now Changzhi City), Lu'an Province (now Changzhi City), and was created in the eighth year of Ming Jiajing (1529) to divide the three counties of Lucheng, Li County, and Huguan, and in the twenty-ninth year of the Qianlong Dynasty (1764) to Change the county to Pingshun Township (1), and the county system was restored during the Republic of China. Lucheng (潞城) is a spring and autumn luzi infant kingdom caiyi, historically known as the tomb (2). Local inscriptions say that when they are in the book, they are called Pingyi, or Pingshunli, Pingshun Township, Qingyangli, or Lucheng County as Baby City, Jiaoling, etc., all of which are based on this.

The largest Nine-Day Virgin Temple in Binh Soon County is in Donghe Village. Donghe Village now belongs to Beishe Township, known as Dongyu in ancient times, or written as Donggu, also known as Notre Dame Valley, which used to belong to Sanchili. Located in the Taihang Mountains, there are nine peaks and arches on all sides, and the front and back are double streams, and the terrain is deep and dangerous. The Temple of our Lady of the Nine Heavens is located in the west of the village, on a high hill surrounded by mountains and waters, sitting north and facing south, which was called Ancestral Island by the ancients. There are 32 inscriptions from the previous Republic of China in the temple, of which 16 are related to opera. The xiqu inscription contains a summary of the history of rural theater, and several pieces of information on the performance of the opera, in addition to being a supplement to the historical materials of the opera, it also has the research value of history, culture, religion and folklore. They are considered here together and appended at the end of the text for the sake of the same good.

1. Religious myths and local rumors in the stele

Pingshun Dongyu Temple may have originated in the Tang Dynasty, and is related to the fact that Taoism was favored by the imperial court in the early Tang Dynasty. The Nine Heavenly Virgins were originally a God of Taoism, and their status was only below that of the Queen Mother of the West. Therefore, the stele says that the choice of the main god is nothing more than two points: one praises the virgin's "thunder and electricity, praises the heavens and cultivates the earth", especially "spiritual experience"; the second quotes the local father and elder legend, Tang Lijing saw the Virgin here, and was subjected to the rain of the heavenly symbols, so that the local to the "Immortal Land of the Virgin". Obviously, the former is derived from Taoist propaganda, the latter is derived from myths made up by legendaries, and relatively speaking, myths have a more direct impact on the worship of the Virgin mary of the villagers.

Taoist propaganda says that the Nine Heavenly Virgins are "in heaven for the mysterious jade girl, in the earth for the Taiyi Yuanjun", "the cardinal of the Quan Dao, occupying the true world of immortality", the wind and the clouds, the miraculous power. It is also said that the prominence of the Virgin Mary also lies in the fact that she is the mother of Lao Tzu and Lao Jun. The Tang DuanCheng style "Youyang Miscellaneous Tricks" has several statements:

The old monarch mother is known as Xuan Miao Jade Girl, the heavens descend Xuan Huang, the qi is like a projectile, the entrance is pregnant, the concentration of the Qiong Fetal Palace 3,700 years, the Chi Ming Kai Luck, the age in the jiazi, born in the knife, the kingdom of Gai Tianxina, the Yu Yu Shan Dan Xuan Zhi Ah. It is also known that Lao Jun was born in the eighth year of the fetus, cut off the left side and was born with a white head. Also known: At the end of the Qing Emperor's devastation, yuan qi changed its fortune and took the form of the Hong's compatriots. Also known: Li Mu, Ben Yuanjun also. Nissei entrance, swallowing and pregnant, three-color qi around the body, five elements of beast guard shape, so seventy-two years and born Chen Guoku County Laixiang Vortex Water Sun, Nine Wells West Lixia. ⑶

Therefore, taoists do the Nine Heavens Virgin Class (Keyi), and the commonly used white text is:

The show is born, and the apparition is everywhere. The mighty light is unpredictable, and the magic is used on everyone. The body of the Jade Woman appears, and she is the Lord of Protection. Nine daughters should be merciful to Xi Yin, pouring hundreds of medicines and wisdom Zhou Tong. Walk in the Ten Directions, Grace Wednesday Boundary. ⑷

However, the real improvement of the status of this goddess is still "mother is precious to son", just like the noble lady of the feudal era. Following Emperor Gaozong's posthumous honoration of Lao Tzu as the "Xuanyuan Emperor", Wu Zetian, who had a bit of feminist thinking, posthumously honored the Virgin Mary as "Empress Dowager Xiantian" in September of the second year of Guangzhai (685). Later, Song Zhenzong, who was more respectful of Taoism, made the Virgin Mary the "Queen of the Great Sage of Yuantian" in the fifth year of the Great Zhongxiang Fu (1012), and in March of the first year of the Tianxi (1017), Yanzhou Taiji Guancheng was officially canonized. (5) It can be known that the pious Virgin Sacrifice in the Pingshun area began in the Tang Dynasty and flourished more than the Song Dynasty, and has its own specific cultural background.

According to local legend, the story of Li Jing being known as the Virgin and acting on behalf of Tianxingyu was originally a Tang novel, but it has been greatly changed. The earliest surviving inscriptions in the temple - completed in the third year of the Northern Song Dynasty (1100), the "Monument of the Holy Virgin of Sanchidong in Lucheng County, Luzhou" (Appendix 1), which was erected in the first year of the Jingguo Dynasty (1101), with the inscription "Writer Zhang Xiaoxian, Scholar Wang Jinglin", Liu Tangxi, the chief bookkeeper, Liu Zonghe, the governor of the prefecture defense and the governor of the county, etc., participated in the period. These people have knowledge and status, but they are convinced of this rumor, which shows the depth of its foundation and the spread of its far-reaching. The tablet says:

In Shangdang County, Luzhou Lu • ChengXian Sanchi Lidong, the ancient cloud number of the Virgin's Fairy Township, there are palaces and beautiful, and the spirits are like Faqi. Jin Fengtai is high, idle in the guard horse; the Sea Immortal Hall Ao, listed in the Cloud Soldiers. This is the place where the Tang Dynasty did not go to the Wei referendum, and the feast was re-bestowed by the Virgin, the heavens of Luanxiang Yunkou, and the country of China cleansed by thunderstorms.

Li Jing, whose real name was Yaoshi, was a native of Jingzhao Sanyuan (present-day northeast of Sanyuan County, Shaanxi), and was made the Duke of Weiguo with his meritorious title, and both the old and new Book of Tang have their legends. The so-called "Palace of Ge Xian Gong Refining Medicine" in the stele refers to the Ge Hong Ancestral Hall under the Dayu Mountain at the boundary between Ping and Lu. "Shen Xian, a descendant of the Yi people, met Ge Hong here and taught the art of alchemy", because of the construction of his temple (6). There are two eyes of the ancient well, "according to legend, Ge Hong's master Bao Yuan learned the Tao here", so it is also known as Ge Jing Mountain (7). The Taihang dialect "Ge" and "Gai" sound close, so the inscription is written "Gaijing". And Dongyu Nanshan has a "divine spring", "in the folklore, people see a white tiger entering the south mountain, looking for the mountain and not seeing, stopping a wooden arrow, pulling out the arrow to get water, hence the name." (8) This is the origin of the phrase "The Land of the South Without The Tiger" in the stele, and Fu Hui will end up with the myths of Nanshan Learning Dao and Rotten Keshan to polish its text.

Another earlier inscription in the temple is the "Record of rebuilding the Temple of our Lady" founded in the second year of the Yuan-Mongolian Unification (1261). It also mentions the story of Li Jingxingyu and discusses:

God is invisible, and he who sees is a demon; dreams cannot be signed, and those who sign are almost delusional. However, Xiao Bai's relatives are dressed in purple and hegemonic, and the sub-room is yellowstone and Xinghan, which is clearly stated in the past life, and the common knowledge of the later advance is also known. If so, then Li Yaoshi's dragon Xuan flew into the air, and the sky was poured out to save the drought, although he did not believe it, he got it? When emperor Taizong, Sweeping Lone Sui, Nanping Guanhui, north to Yin Mountain, swinging his sword into a river, turning day into night, not the secret blessing of all souls, who can be compared with this?

Xiao Bai is the Duke of Qi Huan. "Liang Ziyi", from the "Zhuangzi Dasheng" chapter, to the effect that: Huan Gongtian Yuze, Guan Zhongyu, see the ghost, ask Guan Zhonghe what he saw, to the point of saying: "The subject sees nothing." Huan Gong was ill, but asked the prince if there was a ghost, and the prince said, "Yes." So he listed the names of various ghosts and gods, and emphasized that "the wild has wandering, and the ze has a snake." Then he said, "The snake is as big as a hub, as long as a hub, and purple and crowned." When they hear the sound of thunder and car, they stand with their hands in their hands, and those who see them are overwhelmed. Huan Gong smiled and said, "This widow has seen it too." (9) Zifang is Zhang Liang's character, and "Li Huangshi" refers to the entry of his bridge, see the biography of the "Records of History". In the biography, it is written that the old man of The Bridge later liked to teach it with a book of soldiers: "Reading this, it is the master of the king, and the next ten years are prosperous." Thirteen years later, the widow saw me, and jibei valley city under the mountain - Huangshi, that is, I am. Zhengyi quotes Kong Wenxiangyun from the Chronicle of The Land: "Huangshi Gong, with white eyebrows, a staff and a cane, and a red shoe." "°) The sub-room read his books, and was able to respond to the change of opportunity and power, so that Han Gaozu would pacify the world. See also "Immortal Transmission Collection" (1) from the Taiping Guangji. With the help of these two stories, the stele tries to prove that Li Jing's act of raining at the behest of the Virgin Mary is not a vain thing, and even his great achievements such as "sweeping away the lonely Sui" are also the result of "the secret blessing of all souls". A Taoist tone. The author of the inscription, Qin Yanke, was a Taoist monk and a lecturer at the Three Caves of Pingyang Road (平陽路, in present-day Linfen, Shanxi). At the end of the signature, "Yanhe □ Zhi and Shu", Yanhe may have been his disciple, and was a supplementary reporter and a shudan person of the stele. The inscription reads "Former Marshal of the Zhaoyi Army of Luzhou Prefecture, Concurrently Envoy of the Town to Curb the Military and Civilian Visits, Bringing Forward the Military and Civilian Mouth of the County□ Ma Qianjian", "Deputy Lieutenant Wang Bozhou of Jinyi, Wang Xin Lishi of Cang". The inscription also records "male, ma de, the county magistrate; the second male, the army of Thousand Households Ma Liang; the second male, the county Ofumakou", etc., all of whom are the sons of Ma Xi. "Ben County" refers to Lucheng County. The deeds of the people are unknown. Together with the Song Stele, the names, origins, and official positions of these people can all be used as Fang Zhi information, and the help of The Examination jin is old.

According to the story of Li Jingxingyu, it first appeared in Tang Li Fuyan's "Record of continuing Xuan Wei". Neiyun Li Jingwei tried to shoot in the Hunting Spirit Mountain, lived in the home of a local farmer, and once stayed in a certain Zhumen Dadi because of getting lost, and the old lady set up a banquet to entertain. Halfway through the night, Jing heard the sound of slamming the door very urgently, but the rainy day charm arrived. It turned out that this was the Dragon Palace, and the old woman, the Mother of Dragons, had to ask Li Jing to do the rain on her behalf in a hurry because her second son was not there. After Li Jing agreed, the Mother of Dragons ordered the yellow head to form a green cat horse, and ordered to take the rain vessel, which was a small bottle, tied to the saddle. Commandment: "Lang rides on a horse, without missing a link, believes in his deeds, and the horse runs and hisses, that is, takes a drop of water from the bottle, drops on the horse's mane, and is careful not to be more." "And then write Li Jing—"

So he got on his horse and flew up, and suddenly he grew taller, but he was surprised that he was in a hurry, and he did not know that his clouds were also on it, and the wind was as fast as an arrow, and the thunder began to fall down, so he jumped and dripped with it. Now that the electricity was opened, he saw the village where he was resting, and thought: "I have disturbed this village a lot, Fang Deqi people, there is no way to repay, this long drought seedlings will be emaciated, and the rain is in my hands, would you rather regret it?" Gu one drop is not enough, but twenty drops in a row, and the Russian rain is over, and the horse returns. The lady wept in the hall and said, "What is wrong with that?" If it is about one drop, why is it twenty feet of rain in private? This drop is a foot of rain on the ground. This village is half flat at night and the water is two meters deep, is there anyone? The concubine has been condemned for eighty years, but her back is full of blood, and her son is sitting continuously, so why not?" Jing Kuo did not know what to do"12)

In the Song and Yuan tablets, the mother of the dragon is changed to the Nine Heavenly Virgins, the water bottle is changed to the heavenly scoop, and the Lingkong Mountain in the novel is actually located in the mountain near Dongyu, saying that Dongyu is "the place where Wei Gong is on vacation", and probably li Jing did bad things with good intentions, and made a festive ending, so that the local was upgraded to "the immortal town of the Virgin". There was a Li Jing Hall in the Temple of Our Lady very early on, and the county chronicle also said: "Li Wei Gong Temple, Tanche, Qianshan, Wang Zhuang and other villages have it." [(3) The worship of the Virgin Mary was extended to the worship of Li Weigong, which became a major feature of local religious folklore. In fact, there are Li Weigong temples everywhere in southeastern Jin, and the original intention of its creation was mainly for zero sacrifice.

In addition to the myth of rainfall, there is another legend about Li Jing and the Virgin Mary in the Pinglu area. In the eleventh year of Qing Yongzheng (1733), the "Monument to the Borrowing Pavilion of the Earthen Pavilion after the Reconstruction of the Nine-Day Virgin Dressing Building" (Appendix 6) wrote:

According to the fathers and elders, Emperor Zhenguan of Tang ordered Li Wei to march under the red wall of Zhangshui and pass through this place, and the residents were safe and sound. In the army, the loving mother appeared holy, and the jumping beam clown was flattened, and it was rebuilt with the will of wei gong. And the temple is grand, and the eaves are green and flying, which is called the heavenly grand trace. The townspeople could not bear to drown out their affairs, and they listed the Li Weigong Ancestral Hall on the left side of the main hall, and they never forgot it.

The inscription "Written by Wang Xun of the Year Gongsheng, a student of the government Qin Zuo's new book", says that Zhangshui Chibi is one of the eight scenic spots of pingshun in the past, "Chibi Suspension", in the south of Chibi Village in Xin'anli, there are stone cliffs and deep streams, and the height is more than one of them. At this point, the water rushed into the stream, roaring like thunder, the air was like fog, and the waves were like pearls" ["J. According to this theory, Li Jing originally did not receive the rain of the Heavenly Symbol here when he was not encountered, but as a commander, he came here to recruit the enemy, and because of the "manifestation of the mother" in the army, he helped him win the battle, so he "rebuilt" the temple of the Virgin Mary. As for the location of Li Jing's garrison, Fang Zhijun said that it was in Shentou Village, Lucheng County. The Lu'an Fu Zhi (潞安府志) is yun: "The head of the god is thirty miles north of (Lucheng) County, with ancient trees and smokey mountains, there is a Tang Li Wei Gong Temple, and the former garrison is in Yuzi. The Shanxi Tongzhi Zhi And quoted from the Lucheng County Chronicle:

Legend has it that troops were stationed here. Later Jin GaozuChu, with YinSuke, was crowned king, and was known as "Lingxian", see the Inscription of Yang Yifang of the Yi people. There are also records of the Temple Repair of Zhang Shan, a person from The First Year of the Song Dynasty, a record of the Temple repaired by Lü Sheng, the deputy envoy of the Yuan Fu Dynasty, and the record of the Restoration of Jin Tai and the Second Year Jinshi Wang Majesty. These monuments have all been extinguished. However, although the families remembered the rumors that Li Jing was stationed here, they did not believe in the saying that "Li Weigong marched under the Red Cliff of Zhangshui" and "the loving mother in the army appeared holy, and the clown who jumped the beam was flattened." In the old days, there were always some confucians who liked to put rumors into practice, so there were such unruly remarks. It is far less magnificent and moving than the myth of rain, and it is estimated that it was produced late, and it is not related to the original intention of praying for rain to build a temple, so it is actually not popular among the masses.

Second, the creation and change of the stele of the dance hall of this temple

The 16 inscriptions related to opera in the Temple of our Lady of the Nine Heavens truly record the millennia-old mileage of its dance building from creation, reconstruction to continuous repair, which is equivalent to a brief history of a rural theater. From this, we can see how the local villagers painstakingly went through the camp and endured the storms and disasters of the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, and all this was only out of the piety of the gods. This is simply unbelievable to people today.

The Northern Song Dynasty Zhang Xiaoxian stele said that "the good workers were ordered to repair the North Hall again and create the Dance Building", and in the stele there are "creating a dance building and a corridor with a total of fifty rooms", "the old man who repaired the dance building" and "the fifteen people who repaired the dance building", that is, the iron evidence that the temple had already built a dance building at the beginning of the twelfth century. This is one of the only Song stele found so far that contains the word "Dance Floor" in the three links, so it is extremely precious.

Although the monument of the second year of the Unification of the Yuan Dynasty did not mention the dance building, but the reconstruction was due to the serious damage to the temple on the occasion of the Jin Yuan Yi Dynasty, "knowing that after the robbery of the ashes, only the remaining land, the brick mouth, the barrel mouth is not prepared, it will be annihilated, and the second will be desolate", so it was impossible to sit idly by and watch the ruins of the dance building at that time. Niu Liankui's "Wulou Fu" stele (Appendix 15) is Yun: "The Book of King Jinglin of KaoWang, read the Record of Zhang Xiaoxian, based on the third song and Yuan Symbols, remade in the second part of the Yuan Dynasty." "It is reasonable for him to count the rebuilding of the dance building at the beginning of the Yuan Dynasty.

Another time the stele was repaired in the early Ming Dynasty, and there is a stele of Hongwu's twelfth year (1379) "Records of the Addition of Wulou by the Donggu Society" (attachment 3). The calligraphy of the stele is somewhat clumsy, and the engraving is also very poor. The word "Wu" only appears in the title, and according to the identity of the main god, other inscriptions and existing temples, there has never been and will not be any Wu Lou here, so the word "Wu" should be a mistake of the word "dance". The author signed "Qin Jingtang of this village", is also a Shudan person, the Standing Stone Man, that is, the old man in the countryside praised in the monument, and his two sons, a group of people are not very highly educated, it is inevitable that they will be typographical. The inscription is not long, only saying that the temple of Our Lady:

The eaves of the temple, the age is deep, the wind and rain are invaded, and the rats and finches are noisy. The people in the house have repeatedly repaired and repaired, and it seems to be terrible, but the base site of the SiLou is not completed. Once the elderly Chang Pu said to the crowd: "The main hall is majestic and full of admiration, and the building site is mutilated, can there be no repair?" So he donated his own expenses, and because of the strength of the crowd, the stones and flowers were brilliant because of the moon.

This time it was only a dance building, not anything else, so it took a short time. Among them, the two sentences of "the base site of Silou is not complete" and "the site of the building is mutilated" refer to the tail left by the last project. The last project was probably at the end of the Yuan Dynasty, or in the early years of Hongwu. At that time, the dance floors left by Song Jin and the middle of the Yuan Dynasty, such as the width, depth, structure and front and backstage layout, no longer met the needs of the development of opera, so Taihang all over the world expanded its scale and transformed its shape. Dongyu is no exception, only because the manpower and material resources are not very sufficient for a while, which leaves the regret of "the base site is not finished", waiting for posterity to repair. If our inference is correct, then a reconstruction by Hongwu twelve years ago should be a major change for the dance hall of this temple.

At the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, there was also a dance building project, also in Hongwujian, but the specific date is unknown. The inscription on its reconstruction is still in the late Qing Dynasty, and the author of the "Dance Floor Fu" praises it accordingly:

Huan Hu Daming, a good official, Xian Tong knew his official title, and Qin Liangbi marked his surname. Laboriously, suspected not to shy away, a pillar of arrogance, scattered thousands of gold and paved the ground. The Father is the cause of creation and the Son is the cause, and the story is followed by the will. The walls are easy to soil and brick, and the things are always remembered and forever.

The Kangxi edition of the Chronicle of Pingshun County reads: "Qin Liangbi, a native of Donggu. Hongwu Zhong, with his meritocracy, went to the capital of Beijing Province, where he was more talented and could be appointed as a lieutenant colonel. [(7) Lieutenant Zhongxian is the name of a Wushan official, inherited from the Yuan Dynasty in the early Ming Dynasty, and the rank is from Liupin ((8).] The stele calls his official title Tongzhi (同知), Tongzhi (同知) the adjutant of Zhizhou (知州), and the Ming system (明制) is also from Liupin (9). The two coincide. At the end of the Yuan Dynasty, when Zhang Shicheng established himself as king, he had dismissed the examination, and did not order the Si Cha to raise up the talents, because of this in the early Ming Dynasty, there were eight eyes of the talents, and the second was "virtuous and virtuous". Qin Liangbi took the advantage of the virtuous and the superior, and was given the same knowledge, which was unimaginable when the imperial examination was operating normally, "Gai is the time when there is no other way to advance, so it is often more sudden and noble" is also [test.

According to this, Qin Liangbi built the temple before he won the official position, and was completed after he took office. The so-called "father is to create and son is to cause, to tell his deeds and to follow his aspirations", and to say "suspicion does not shy away", detailing its meaning, it seems that the matter of xianliang chao taking is related to his performance of donating a lot of money to build the temple. As for the former and after this project and the Hongwu twelve years, it is not known, only that the buildings, including the dance building, the original earthen wall this time have been replaced by brick walls, costing thousands of silver, and the project is also quite large.

Another major temple repair project in the Ming Dynasty was planned in the twenty-third year of Jiajing (1544), and the next year it began to work, and it was not completed until the thirty-seventh year, which took 13 years. See Jiajing's forty-first year Yiren Baishan Shibu's "Rebuilding the Shrine of the Nine Heavenly Virgins" (Attachment 4). At the end of the stele, there is the name of the head of the Sixth Year of the Apocalypse (1626) Contest and the head of the Fuji Monument in the Fifth Year of Chongzhen (1632), which was obviously re-erected by Chongzhen in the fifth year. In front of the monument, "buy a nail car" is a text, which was supplemented by posterity. This reconstruction of Jiajingjian has greatly improved the appearance of the temple, and many of the original temples have been renovated and many houses have been added:

Its new builders are the northwest corner of the ancestral system, the northeast corner of the eight jacaranda; its re-cultivators, the main hall of the three jacaranda, the houtu hall three jacaranda, the li jing king hall three jacaranda, the west pavilion hall three jacaranda, the southeast corner of the fourteen jacaranda, the southwest corner of the eleven jacaranda. An original image is attached to each of them. As for the mountain gate, the stool is made of bricks, and all the walls are bricks. The dance floor is made of stone, and the foundation of the dance is stone. The price of the craftsman's work, the rations of the service, and the materials needed are three hundred and ninety thousand, the rice is strange in one thousand stones, and the grain is strange in five hundred stones. The goods are hats, and the livestock are cattle and sheep, all of which are counted.

The original wooden pillars of the dance floor were replaced by stone pillars, which may be overhauled by the drop frame. The mountain gate and the courtyard wall are bricked, and all the houses are stone, so the time is long and the cost is high. After this reconstruction, the halls of the Temple of Our Lady of the East River were more or less systematic, and there were no major changes along the way to the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the People's Republic. However, judging from the situation described in the Zhongshan Gate and the Dance Tower of the Stele, the two were not integrated buildings at that time. The dance hall may be inverted with a mountain gate on its side, or it may be independent of the courtyard and at a certain distance from the main hall. Observing the terrain outside the mountain gate, I thought that the possibility of falling into the dance floor was unlikely. The Dogang where the temple is located was originally not wide enough, and many houses were built one after another, and the remaining area was naturally narrower (2)). That is to say, if the dance floor is originally in the courtyard, the use of space is certainly not suitable for large-scale repertoire performances, and sooner or later it will experience a real revolution.

The complete renovation of the Dongyu Temple Dance Building was in the early Qing Dynasty, in the thirty-seventh year of the Kangxi Dynasty (1698), and the "Monument to the Rebuilding of the Temple of the Nine Heavenly Virgins" (Appendix 5) by Wang Zunxian of Bagongsheng described the incident. At that time, the villagers overhauled their temples three times in a row, one in the second year of Shunzhi (1645) and the completion of his fifth year (1648). The other two times were during the Kangxi Dynasty:

Since Jia Yin started working, the dance building was rebuilt, the freshening building was rebuilt in the year of B, the Ten Shuai Hall was repaired, and the new theater building was built in the year of Chengchen, and the three years and four achievements were completed. ...... At the right time, Wu Rebellion was rampant, and the people's hearts were full of mouth, so that the work was stopped. And thirty-five years of C... Each village raised money and grain, replaced soft doors, painted temples, repaired screens, and smoked magnificently, and increased the brilliance of the society. Those who want to lift the front and stop it, to the end, and gather it up.

The so-called "Wu Rebellion" in the stele refers to Wu Sangui, who first surrendered and then rebelled, and the incident occurred in Yunnan, which also had a strong impact on the interior, so that the people here once suspended their temple construction projects. It is worth noting that the inscription says that in the twelfth year of the Kangxi Dynasty, Jiayin (1673) rebuilt the dance building, and in the year of Ying Chen (1676), a new theater building was built, but it is not clear whether the dance building and the theater building coexist. According to the existing architectural considerations, I thought that the reconstructed dance hall of the temple was still there, but it was expanded into a dance pavilion (more on that). The newly built theater building is located in the location of the existing theater stage, and it is integrated with the mountain gate, because of the perfect temple appearance of Jiajingjian, which will be regarded as a "big collection".

At this point, the temple theater building, regardless of its location and shape, has been roughly fixed. Thereafter, qianlong thirty-eight years (1773) "Reconstruction of the Nine Heavens Virgin Temple Monument" (attachment 7), fifty-five years (1790) "reconstruction of the Guandi Temple Guangsheng Ancestral Hall Sancao Hall Ten Kings Hall Dressing Building Ten Shuai Hall Drama Building East and West Kitchen Coal Horse Room" (attached 8), only a few small-scale repairs. "At that time, it seemed that there was a five-year maintenance rule, and the management of the temple was more standardized.

The last time the Temple of Our Lady was rebuilt was in the fourth year of Tongzhi (1865), and there is a stele of "Rebuilding the Kiln Pavilion of the Dance Building" (Attachment 14) co-authored by Tongzhi Five-Year Gongsheng Changshan Feng and Zi Lisheng Chang Qianzhi. The tablet says:

The scale of the dance building of the past is humble, and the walls are covered, which is not enough to be spectacular, not enough to soothe the eyes and ears. Over the years, the rain eroded and the wind drifted, the eaves were flying, the eyebrow beams were prominent, and the shape of the pouring could not last forever.

Changshan Feng, the reprint of the "Pingshun County Chronicle" mistakenly wrote that "Chang Lan was the result of first mistakenly " phoenix " for "wind", and then because of the vertical arrangement of "mountain" and "wind", and then connected together. Under the name of Changshan Feng in the Appendix of pingshun township chronicle, only the word "Engong" (5) is noted, and the stele is signed by the people of Pingshun Changjia Village. He said that the dance floor was "difficult to start", and obviously did not look closely at the Song Monument and was negligent. This time it was from Tongzhi Yanhai (1863) and was completed two years later, "the comprehensive bill is 1,345,000 taels." The author said: "On the day of achievement, Yu Chi guan Yan, see Si Lou ye, two walls and one, three sides exquisite, wheel Yan Yan, high and beautiful, is nothing less than the mirage of the sea city is currently there." "This is indeed the highest, largest and most beautiful dance building in the history of the temple, so the memory of a monument is still insufficient, and ten years later, a stele dedicated to the opera building was engraved.

The stele was erected in the first year of Guangxu (1875) and signed "Jia Yin Shi Jin Shi Shi Zhi Zhi Niu Liankui's name also appears in the Changshan Fengbei Monument, entitled "Pingshun Township Qinghe Village Gongsheng that is, the selection and training of Niu Liankui Shudan". According to this, it can be seen that the so-called nian jin shi shi is the nian gong sheng, which is the beautiful name of the nian gong sheng, just like the yuan and ming dynasties have called people the township jinshi. He was somewhat talented in literature and was quite famous locally. The "Chronicle of Pingshun County• Biography of WenRu" contains:

Niu Lian Kui Zi Gong Shu, Qing he villagers. Chengfeng Jia Yin Gong. Ren Lingqiu County. Long in poetry, indifferent to self-indulgence. The creation of the Luping Examination Institute is quite vigorous. Its pair of Lianyun: "Thousand Autumn Guoshi is springed out, and the flat color talent is selected." "After the Nine Heavens of Dongyu, the Temple of our Lady of the Virgin Mary was built, and the servant (score) "Dance Floor Fu".

This endowment can be divided into eight floors, and the end of each floor is connected, which is exactly the eight characters of "Tongzhi Four Years of Rebuilding the Dance Building", which coincides with the self-annotation under the title. This is the rhyme of the ordinal characters, and the body has the general style of inheriting and turning the eight strands of endowment, which is specialized in the Ming and Qing dynasties. However, Niu Liankui is after all a stage that uses laying out techniques to praise his hometown, and the sincerity and excitement of emotions are difficult for the ordinary eight strands of hope. The work vividly summarizes the historical changes of the Dance Building of the Temple of Our Lady, praises its solidity, steepness and beauty, and is quite endowed with physical work, which is an image summary of the history of the Dance Building of the Temple. It is inevitable that there are some exaggerations and exaggerations when describing the new dance building, but the recounted repairs of the past dynasties are mostly based on the inscriptions he saw, so its main content is still credible.

Based on the inscriptions of various families, the dance hall of this temple was founded in the third year of the Northern Song Dynasty, when it was probably in the courtyard. In the second year of the Unification of the Yuan Dynasty, it was rebuilt with its serious corruption. A major repair at the end of the Yuan Dynasty or the beginning of the Ming Dynasty expanded its scale and was completed by the twelfth year of Hongwu. When Jiajing rebuilt the temple in 24 years, only the wooden pillars of the dance floor were replaced by stone pillars. Its radical change was in the early Qing Dynasty, kangxi twelve years to rebuild the original dance building, fifteen years to build a new dance building, so that it and the mountain gate into one. This dance building was renovated in the fourth year of Tongzhi, "the north is in the right position, the south side is extended", and its scale is expanded again. Since then, although Zhang Shutang's inscription in the 25th year of the Republic of China (1936) said that "the decadent ones are new" (Attachment 16), its main structure has not been changed, and it is still used as an opera performance.

3. The current situation of the Temple of Our Lady and its dance building and the monk's dance building

The stage of ancient China has long been an indispensable part of temple architecture. Except for buddhist temples, other temples are not complete without a stage temple. The Changshan Phoenix Stele is inscribed with clouds: "During the festival, there is a dance building." (P.14) He said it best about the origin of the creation of the temple dance floor. Each temple is centered on a single main deity, and then many gods are brought in pragmatically to form a complete and self-sufficient deity system. The ancient countryside, as well as most of the town theatre stages, are located in the small background of this mysterious culture.

From the inscription, it can be seen that the Dance Building of the Temple of Our Lady was already facing the main hall, the Houtu Hall and the Li Jing Hall during the Song and Yuan Dynasties, and the gods and their temples continued to increase during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Later, before the main hall was the Pretty Dance Pavilion, and then in front of it was the Yamamon Dance Building. The east and west of the courtyard were built with the temples of the Emperor, the King of Lingyi, the King of Yanluo, the Descendants (Gao Nu), the Ten Shuais, and the Three Caos, as well as the Zen Room, the Treasury, the Southeast Second Kitchen, the Horse House, the Coal House and other ancillary buildings. Under the mountain gate, there are also three east and west caves facing south, and seven pavilions on the top of the kiln, which are close to the back walls of the buildings on both sides of the mountain gate. The Jiajing Stele says that it is "nine jacaranda in the northwest corner, eight jacaranda in the northeast corner", "fourteen jacaranda in the southeast corner, and eleven in the southwest corner", and now except for the building in the southwest corner, the rest is basically intact. The main hall is still dedicated to the Virgin, the east and west side halls are dedicated to the Emperor Guan and Confucius, the northeast corner is dedicated to the King of Yan and the King of Medicine, the northwest corner is Hou Tu and Li Jing, the east is the dressing building, and the west is the Hall of Descendants. Confucius, the Medicine King, the Stove King, and the Dragon King are all new gods in recent years, while the Three Caos, the Ten Shuai, and the Lingyao King are gone, and the elevation of the Stove King to the side hall is not in line with the ancient system, but its mysterious religious atmosphere is still not reduced in that year.

The Temple of Our Lady is equipped with the spirit of the god King, and is the god of the Taihang Three Gorges Mountain, which is commonly worshipped in the Changzhi area. The "Shanxi Tongzhi" quotes the "Tunliu County Chronicle" as saying: "The temple is at the top of the mountain. For twenty years, Song Chongning gave him the title of Marquis of Xianying. According to Yun: "The temple is called the King of the Guardian Spirit, and Gaijin and Yuanjian are also crowned kings." He also said, "Ming HongWu Gengji, renamed the god of the Three Mountains, was blessed with the festivals of mid-spring, seasonal summer, and mid-autumn." ...... In the next province, the incense is endless. (2) The people of Taihang made and sacrificed this spirit king for the purpose of praying for rain.

The existing three Shanmen Dance Buildings are a typical Qing Dynasty building: the appearance is high and magnificent, and the interior looks gorgeous and elegant. From the lower courtyard, you must climb the double 53-step Han White Jade Ladder to enter the mountain gate, that is, the ground floor of the dance building. Outside the mountain gate, as the monument says, "the ground is half bowed, only a foot deep", making the building more steep. The eaves of the hard summit are in front of the gachet, and the four corners of the eaves are complete. There are also warped angles above the posterior ridge. On top of the barrel tile ash ridge, only the crow's tail destroyed one. On the ground floor, there are four square angular stone pillars, which are obviously retracted, and the top stone of the pillar is in the shape of a Sumire stool, and some flowers, plants and trees are carved on the line at the waist. Its Dongping Pillar inscription reads: "Tongzhi Four Years Old Age B Ugly Leap May 22 The inscription on the ridge of the building reads: "The fourth year of the Tongzhi of the Great Qing Dynasty is the sixth day of the first month of July." The two-storey building time is only a month and a half apart. The dance floor is made of Lu Ming, with four rafters in front and behind. The total height of the ground floor is 3.35 meters, the height of the upper column is 3 meters, the depth is 4.27 meters, and the width of the surface is 8.54 meters, of which the width of the Mingjian is 3.95 meters. Four log columns are applied in front of the stage, drums and mirrors, no column side corners and columns arise, nor are they made of moving columns. The flat beams and the five beams are all made of natural curved materials, and the child pillars on the flat beams are combined with the humps of the child pillars on the five beams in the same eagle's mouth, but the former is slightly longer. The two corner beams are relatively short, and there are hanging columns under the golden trusses that intersect them, making the eaves of the mountain added extraordinarily strong. The east and west platforms are wider, and you can watch the play from both sides, so the monument is described as "exquisite on three sides".

The pillar head section on the upper floor of the dance building is built for the heart of the five steps, the single pole is single down, and the inner turn is secretly made. The head of the play contains a beaded dragon's head, and the body is carved into the body of the dragon, and the Huaqi is the tail of the dragon, which becomes a whole dragon, but only pursues the god-like, and is not realistic. Its outer drag ten thousand chess and box chess are carved into rolled grass, and the chess head rolls three petals, which is very gorgeous. Flat body ke only ming one flower, melon ridge sitting bucket, where three slits, out of 45. The sloping building and the oblique ang are carved into three golden dragons, but the middle one has both gods and gods. The oblique arch is used as a dragon's claw, grasping one object each. Hua Heng is the dragon head, and the mouth is a snake. Ang is the body of the dragon, the head is carved into the tail of the dragon, bent upwards and tangled and then extended, the sides of the tail are also dragon claws, making a tight grip, and the mud plate is carved into a water cloud map, so that the dragon has the momentum to fly. Its lining square head and tail intersect with the gold truss stilt, so its role is mainly decorative. Turning the gladiatorial chess is also five steps, single and single down, but there are five slits, and the middle one is 45. Oblique, Oblique, and Yu-Ang, but also all variants. Huaqi is carved as the dragon head, and the lower ang, Yu Ang, and lining square heads are all carved into the dragon body, stretching from bottom to top, while the dragon's tail is slender and single, clinging to the zijiao beam. The remaining four seams are carved in the shape of an approximate dragon. These are all common techniques in southeastern Jin. Because the corner beam strives to extend upward obliquely, its wing angle is high and towering, which is indeed like "whole bird leather".

There are paintings and sculptures of the dance floors. Ehang is made of two thick plants, protruding vertically outside the column, the section is not modified, but the front is painted with a character story, a painted painting, the content is related to the Yongzheng monument that "Li Weigong marched under the Red Cliff of Zhangshui, the soldiers passed through this place, and the residents were safe and unharmed". The picture is divided into two parts, there are five main characters in the east, and in the middle is a bearded general, handsome and green-robed, facing west, who is instructing a general to do something, and the general is half turning around and is instructing another person. Behind the general was his wife, with a dignified and beautiful face, approaching the general. On the left, a handsome young general, probably their son, is standing on his toes as a leader. There are two rows of characters standing on the western screen, face to the west, watching a gushing stream of water, probably the "Chibi Suspension" of one of the eight local scenes mentioned earlier, with quite delicate brushstrokes. The forehead and the finch are covered with through-carvings, especially the two yellow dragons carved in the Ming Dynasty, flying from both sides, carving a lioness and a lion cub, and the lioness steps on the cub at her feet. The rest of the space is full of peonies with buds waiting to be released. Between the two times, there are incense burner fairy bottles, piano, chess, calligraphy, paintings, flowers and birds and the like. This kind of practice of carving all wood and carving beauty is exactly the architectural style of the Qing Dynasty. On the whole, the fine and exquisite wood of the dance floor is not exaggerated to describe it as "smoke lock cloud seal".

On each side of the dance building, there are two two-story mezzanines, "two walls and one", and the three dance buildings are exactly "seven ethereal". The mezzanine is also a hard hilltop, with gray ridges of barrel tiles and no brick carvings on the heads. Four rafters, with a square wooden pillar in the middle, plain flat foundation. On the pillar, there is a forehead and a pubaihang, a doukou jumping head, and a tween wing chess piece. The upper façade wall has now been demolished, while the lower level has a door and a window. There are small doors on the stage to the mezzanine, which is a place for artists to disguise themselves. There is no such thing in the temple to see the building, that is, the place where women watch the play, which is the biggest difference between it and the general temple in southeastErn Jin.

During the festival, the sacrifice is not only in the dance hall, but also in the dedication hall, which is called the borrowing dance pavilion locally. The name is taken from the Analects of the Eight Pretty Dances in the Court.[ In the Western Zhou Dynasty, every eight people in the music and dance queue were one ling, and the eight letters of the Heavenly Son, the six princes, and the four letters of the doctors had their own systems and were not allowed to trespass. The dedication hall follows the name of this ancient Qian dance to show that the songs, dances, team plays and other programs inherent in the rituals and ceremonies of the gods must be staged here, with the same performing arts function as the dance hall.

It should be noted that this beautiful dance pavilion may have been rebuilt from the Ming Dynasty Dance Building on the base site of the Song and Yuan Dance Building. The first reason is that the inscriptions of the three dynasties of the Song, Yuan and Ming dynasties in this temple have never mentioned it, and it can be seen that there was no dedication in the temple at that time. Second, the Kangxi stele says that Jiayin "rebuilt the dance building", and also said that Bingchen "created a drama building", and did not mention the dedication hall or the borrowing of the dance pavilion, but the dance building that took a lot of manpower, material resources and financial resources to rebuild, it was impossible to demolish it after only three years of use, and it was already used as a dedication hall at that time. The third is the three words of "Qianwu Pavilion" until the Yongzheng Monument. Only to appear, but said that "all the Virgin Dressing Building, the Houtu Hall, and his dance pavilion have been built for many years", which is obviously not a new thing, according to which it seems that it can be further concluded that this dance pavilion is the dance building rebuilt by Kangxi. On the central axis of the temple courtyard, it is absolutely impossible to arrange the four buildings of the main hall, the storage dance pavilion, the dance building, and the theater building at intervals, and there is no other way to renovate the original dance building for the dedication hall. Fourth, from the perspective of the existing shape system and the components of stone pillars, pillar foundations, and fighting chess, there are still many Relics of the Ming Dynasty in Qianwu Pavilion, saying that it was transformed from the original dance building, which is not completely unsubstantiated.

His dance pavilion is also on the top of the hill, there is no wall on all sides, and the two corners on the south side extend under the eaves of the dance building, and the two are very close. On top of the gray ridge barrel tiles, the roof ridge is somewhat broken, and the weeping ridge beast, the immortal horn god, and the set of beast vases have long ceased to exist. Its plan is longitudinal and rectangular, which is indeed somewhat special compared with the layout of the general dedication hall with three or five horizontal rooms. Its four rafters are also arranged from east to west, and the mountain flowers are one south and one north. The width of the three rooms is 7.4 meters, the width of the ming room is 3.8 meters, and the depth of the five rooms is 10 meters. The base is 10.3 meters wide, the side width is 12.7 meters, and the base height is only 0.93 meters. They are all sandstone plastered cornices, and the tightening is more obvious, but the pillar foundations are either plain, or covered with lotuses, or square stools, and the shapes are different. The columns are mostly carved and decorated, and the techniques are also very different. These things are not temporary things, and the stone pillars that Jiajing replaced for the original dance floor should also be sandwiched in them. There are four golden pillars in the pavilion, two of which are wooden columns, two in front and two in the back, all of which are short cylindrical stone foundations, which are very different from the cornices. The cornice pillar head family are three stepping on the single cane, the peach surface is oblique, the head is three clouds, and the material is relatively wide, which is also the style of the Ming Dynasty. However, there is a flat body in the Ming Dynasty, sitting with a melon ridge, three steps and three slits, out of 45. Oblique chess, the head is carved as a dragon head with beads, the Chinese chess is carved as the dragon body and dragon tail, and the dragon claws on each side also grasp an object. This is the same as the Wulou Pingshike, but the opposite of the dragon shape, which is naturally the masterpiece of Qing Dynasty carpentry.

According to the regulation of the Song and Yuan dance buildings, although the original dance hall of the temple was expanded by the Ming people, it was at most three rooms in width and depth. Kangxi thirteen years of reconstruction, a short time, followed by the construction of a new theater building, it is unlikely to have the power to expand the scale of the original dance building. Yongzheng five years of reconstruction, it took five years to complete, this has the opportunity to extend it in the direction of the main hall to the five rooms, the two rows of golden pillars were added at about this time, and since then officially renamed the Qianwu Pavilion. The following fifteen years of Daoguang were mainly painted (Attachment 14), and no replacement components were replaced, otherwise they would have been mentioned in the stele. As for its peak structure, it is still due to the style of the Song and Yuan Dance Building, which has not been changed so far. In short, from the dance floor to the letter dance pavilion, it has experienced too many vicissitudes, so it is inevitable to leave historical traces of different periods on its body.

4. Performance information in inscriptions and stage inscriptions

Regarding the opera activities of this temple, there is a very simple record in the stele. In addition, several inscriptions on the wall of the dance floor of the Republic of China period can also provide a little information. Although it is a clue, it can still be seen from it that the opera performances in the Temple of Our Lady in history are still relatively active.

First, the periodic spring prayer and autumn newspaper should be acted. In the Song Stele's sentence "Silk and Bamboo Are Infinite", it may not only refer to song and dance, but also to the miscellaneous opera performances at that time. The inscriptions of the Ming Monument include "Niu Hongguang, head of the Sixth Year of the Heavenly Apocalypse Competition" (Attachment 4), and the Qianlong Fifty-fifth Year Monument also says that "in the Spring Race in March, the Four Villages Shrine Is Lined Up in the Temple" (Attachment 8), and the contest and the Spring Race are all large-scale prayer activities, and they must be sung at that time. The shrine is also known as the shrine, which has a statue of the god, and when greeting the god, it is carried around the street, followed by the fire of the Hundred Opera Society. At the end of the monument of "Dance Floor Fu" is accompanied by a poem of "Four Scenic Cars", which can give us a glimpse of the lively scene of the temple when it greets the Shrine in late spring:

The four scenic shrines do not remember the year, and the eight villages and five societies circulate. The season is the thirteenth spring twilight, and the feast wine is first tasted on February days. After the twenty-four horse buildings are arranged, several heavy society drum columns are present. Rotate east, south, north, and west, worshiping Danxiao TaiyiTian.

The ancient custom here is to hold a village drinking ceremony in February every year, and a competition is held in late spring, which lasts for ten days. The so-called "east-west, south-north-west rotation" means that the competition will be hosted by each village in turn. The program is similar every year, and in addition to opera, there are also a variety of literary and artistic forms performed in the streets and courtyards. Among them, only the "Four Scenic Cars Club" was once a major feature of the local area, but unfortunately, people have already lost their details. The "Four Views" may refer to the scenery of the four seasons of spring, summer, autumn and winter, and the color building is placed on a tall carriage with a long rut. This carriage is only allowed to be used at temple fairs, so it is also known as the sacred carriage. The "Horse Building" is specially used to place the social drum, which is tall and sturdy, and the shape is roughly the same as that of the sacred car. Every year during the competition, the shrines, horse towers, and four scenic shrines of each village must all be mobilized, singing and dancing, gongs and drums are noisy, and competing at the meeting. Because there are four car games, the festive and lively atmosphere of the whole race has become even stronger.

However, one of the inscriptions reads: "Changyi Koukou, the third, fourth and fifth days of the first month of April in the 20th year of the Republic of China", where "Qinglian (Lian) Chuan ... Zhongjie Chuan, Yisi □" and other plays. Changyi refers to Changzhi. It can be seen from this that the spring festival day of the Temple of our Lady of the Republic of China is the fourth day of the first month of April every year, and the three, four and five days of singing opera are three days instead of ten days. This was probably due to the economic conditions at that time, which shortened the duration of the meeting. However, it is said that in recent years it has returned to ten days, and the first day is still the fourth day of the first month of April.

Second, the main god "Christmas" must also be acted. According to local legend, the "birthday" of our Lady is june 19, when the temple will perform a three-day performance to celebrate. There is such a post in the wall of the dance floor inscription: "Luyi Double Music Mouth." Drama Jia (price) five stone rice. Classmates □ what friends see. Life and death depend on fate, and wealth is in heaven. Taishan Tu, Shatuo Guo, Qingfeng Mountain, Qinghe (and) Bridge... o Write a smile. The Republic of China performed for three days on June 17, 18 and 19. "There are eight plays in it, but unfortunately most of them have been scattered. In addition, there is another one: "Liyi Beifang Village Sanle Ban Wang Zhaorong pen." It arrived in April and June of the 27th year of the Republic of China. "Didn't write a play. The third is to mainly enjoy God's "Christmas" and also to act. The "Monument to the Prohibition of Empty Taking of Fruit on trees" (Appendix 12) by Qin Mingzhang, a fifteen-year county magistrate of Daoguang County, says:

Tasting The feast of Sai Ming to undertake sacrifice is to serve the gods wholeheartedly since ancient times. In view of the virtue of the Saint Emperor's wisdom and courage, enjoying the seal of Voldemort the Great, it is advisable to sacrifice piously in order to fulfill the way of the gods. Every year on June 24, the auspicious christmas season, three days of the show, all expenses, according to the fruit tree are apportioned, additional benefactors affix the name of the book.

Folklore says that this Guan Lao Ye loved to watch drama the most, needless to say "the virtue of Being Wise, Benevolent, Courageous", and on this basis, he had to sing for three days. In fact, the villagers love to watch dramas more, which makes up such a "Zhengda" reason.

Fourth, the "opening of light" to the idol must be dedicated.
