The dough kneader is the art of dough sculpture, also known as "kneading powder" and "Jiangmi people". It is a folk craft that uses raw materials such as flour and glutinous rice flour to make various human or animal figures, and is developed on the basis of folk noodle food. In 2017, the Qihe face sculpture technique was included in the list of intangible cultural heritage of Dezhou City and municipality, and many face sculpture enthusiasts appeared in the local area. In recent years, many folk artists have also used lightweight clay as raw materials to create.
When it comes to the origin of facial sculpture, it is actually very common. In many places in ancient mainland China, there was a folk custom of using flour to make "dumplings", "jujube flowers", "moon cakes", "noodle fish" and "noodle sheep" during the New Year's Festival, which were generally used as food with blessing meaning or sacrifice offerings. These "fruit patterns" made of noodles are both delicious and beautiful, and they also contain the wish of Asking for Genefour, which is deeply loved by people. Slowly, there were also special dough kneader masters, using molds or hands to knead various characters and animals into the street market, selling along the street, and those colorful noodle people gradually became unique folk crafts.
The specific age of the origin of the face sculpture is no longer verifiable, but the earliest surviving ancient face man is the facemade female figurine head, the upper body of the male figurine and the face pig excavated in the fourth year (653) of the Tang Dynasty Yonghui in the Astana region of Turpan, Xinjiang. By the Song Dynasty, the dough kneader had become a popular custom in folk seasons. In the Southern Song Dynasty Mengyuan Elder's "Tokyo Dream Record", it is recorded: "The day before the cold food is said to be cooked, the noodles are made of dates and flying swallows, wicker strings are strung, inserted in the lintel, called the son of the swallow", "made of oily molasses like a smiling child, called the fruit pattern". At that time, there were "armor characters", "opera characters", "children birds and beasts", "flying swallow shapes", etc., which can be described as "Kit Kat Hundred Ends".
It is understood that this activity of Qihe was combined with the development of intangible cultural heritage and cultural creativity to bring a visual feast to the masses during the festival. The exhibition will run until March 4.
