Jingwei Quick Review: When the Internet storm occurred, no "keyboard man" was innocent

Zhongxin Jingwei, January 28 (Chang Tao) From the departure of Liu Xuezhou, a teenager who was looking for relatives, to the misinterpretation of the characters in the popular web drama "The Beginning", online violence has once again triggered public indignation and deep thinking.

In the discussion of some public events, some netizens think that they hold the "microphone" of the Internet, wear the "invisibility cloak" of the Internet, or out of a sense of participation, or think that they represent justice, condescending to engage in public opinion trials, and even "human flesh search" parties, personal attacks, and often shout people to "social death", causing the entire network environment to be smoky and miasma, full of hostility. But they do not know that this kind of behavior will not only affect the public's judgment of the facts, but also affect the direction of the whole situation, and even lead to irreparable tragedy.

And when the tragedy of the truth has been revealed, these "keyboard men" who usually command on the Internet are silent, pretend to be deaf and dumb, and think that they can evade responsibility. But don't forget that the internet has a memory. After the Liu Xuezhou incident, Weibo said that it decided to suspend the private message function for more than 1,000 users who sent private messages during this period.

Just as no snowflake is innocent during an avalanche, no "keyboard man" is innocent in a cyberstorm. Those "keyboard men" who rush to meet the desire for expression and add up evil words when the truth is not clear, or do not understand the truth, must be severely punished at the legal level.

Recently, the public has called for online violence to be criminalized. In fact, there is a law to defame others. In 2013, the Judicial Interpretation on Handling Criminal Cases Of Defamation and Other Criminal Cases Committed by Information Networks was promulgated, which stipulates that the criteria for criminalizing the use of information networks to slander others are that the same defamatory information has actually been clicked or viewed more than 5,000 times, or has been forwarded more than 500 times.

On January 25, 2022, the Cyberspace Administration of China issued a notice to launch a one-month special action of "Qinglang 2022 Spring Festival Network Environment Improvement" from now on, focusing on rectifying online violence, spreading rumors and other issues.

The public expects that the internet violence can be effectively punished, and it is even more expected to be fundamentally curbed from the source. While the supervision and platform are working, everyone should also be part of the resistance to the "internet storm", because no one can guarantee that the next person to suffer from online violence is not yourself.
