Kunming, 11 Oct (Xinhua) -- The 15th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity opened in Kunming on 11 October. At the opening ceremony, the heads of the two UN agencies called on all parties to strengthen cooperation in developing an "inclusive and ambitious" blueprint for global biodiversity conservation, and to promote the realization of the 2050 vision of harmonious coexistence between man and nature.

In a video message, UN Environment Programme Executive Director Yinge Annoson warned that "the cost of suicide wars against nature is increasing at an alarming rate" and that existing efforts are not enough to reverse the destruction of nature by humans, and that the Kunming Assembly is an opportunity to change all that. Participants need to take "clear and practical action" to advance the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.

In particular, Anoson called on the international community to mobilize a variety of resources, including financial resources and technology, to support the conservation of biodiversity in developing countries.

Elizabeth Murraymar, Executive Secretary of the Secretariat of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, delivered a speech at the opening ceremony, calling on all parties to translate commitments into "policies, actions and outcomes" to form a "bold, inclusive and ambitious" "post-2020 global biodiversity framework" to halt and reverse the loss of global biodiversity in the next decade, so as to achieve the 2050 vision of harmonious coexistence between man and nature.

Murraema paid special tribute to China's actions in protecting and restoring biodiversity. "From action to eliminate pollution, restoring degraded land, conserving species and ecosystems, to addressing poverty and committing to broader human development goals, the work China has done over the past few decades is representative of our model of change," she said. ”

Egypt hosted the fourteenth Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity. In his opening remarks, Egyptian Environment Minister Yasmin Fouad thanked China for hosting this landmark meeting and called on the international community to translate words into practical policies and actions, strive to "bring nature back to life" in the next decade, and promote the vision of harmonious coexistence between man and nature.

The fifteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity is scheduled to take place in two phases, 11-15 October and the first half of 2022. The first phase of the meeting will be held in a combination of online and offline, and the second phase will be held in the form of an offline meeting. The first phase of the meeting will complete the consideration of various topics other than the "Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework", and the "Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework" will be considered and decided at the second phase of the meeting.
