【Free Poem】

After the May Fourth Movement, vernacular literature prevailed, and vernacular poetry also prevailed. Vernacular poetry is liberated from the grammar of literary poetry, similar to the free verse poem of Western poetry. The early vernacular poets did not admit that they were influenced by Western poetry, but the branches of vernacular poetry were clearly imitations of Western poetry, and some new poems at that time had more imitations of Western poetry in terms of rhyme. Below, a few poems that imitate Western poetry (free poems) are listed;

1, Rhymeless poems (plain poems)

【Lighting】

"Shining in the darkness,

A yellow light,

I will be by your sparkle,

Gaze into her eyes. ”

--Zhu Ziqing

2, Between rhyme and non-rhyme, it is a free poem with heavy words at the end of some lines

【Fallen Leaves】

"The autumn wind blows the leaves to the ground,

It can only know solso,

A few mournful noises..."

——Liu Fu * *

【Riverside】

"The clouds are in the sky,

                *

Man on earth,

              *

Shadow on the water,

               *

Shadow on the clouds.

--Guo Shaoyu

This kind of verse with the same last word has the effect of replacing the rhyme foot. However, in the West, there are also so-called sentence rhymes occasionally; therefore, if the same word is used at the beginning of a sentence, it also has the effect of a sentence rhyme. Free poems do not rhyme, and often use the same words at the beginning of sentences as satisfaction. For example, the famous poet Bian Zhilin cleverly quoted the same text at the beginning of the sentence in the creation of his poem "Round Treasure Box";

“...... A sparkling mercury,

         *   *

Has the hue of the whole world,

A golden light,

  *  *

Shrouded in a feast,

A fresh raindrop

*    *

Contain your sigh from last night...

3, "jagged poetry" also belongs to a category of free poetry; completely untidy lines of poetry are its typical features. But it has a rhyme. The West also has this type of free poetry. For example, Guo Moruo's:

The Temptation of Death

"I have a knife

                        *

Leaning against the window and smiling at me,

                           *

She smiled at me and said:

                   *

Mo Ruo, don't worry about it!

                               *

Come and kiss me on the mouth,

I will remove many troubles for you.

                                        *

However, more are rhyming poems with uneven numbers, such as Ye Shaojun's poem "Sad words";

"A friend's wife died,

He suppressed his grief

Say to me:

"Now I have to look for a change of clothes!"

My relatives

A six-year-old child died,

The letter says:

"That's it! Only his picture remains! ”

Here, I must state that my article does not represent my desire to discuss poetics with anyone. Of course, under the conditions of later time, I do not rule out the possibility of this aspect. - On whether free poetry should be constrained by the number of tones, the steps of the music, and how to view the phenomenon of career change and even the fields covered, etc. I hope that this article can be enjoyed with everyone and share the poetic language from different carriers. Touched by their truth, goodness and beauty. Finally, allow me to conclude with the words of Mr. Wang Li, a giant in Chinese poetics: "The style of free poetry is still very popular to this day. We don't have to spend too much research time on it. This is because we don't have much to say about free verse. Since we are free, we do not pay attention to the rules, so our description of free poetry is only a negation of various laws. In the past two decades, vernacular poetry has gradually become more Europeanized, and poets have gradually imitated the Western style of rhyme [Mr. Wang Li's "Chinese Poetic Rhythms"].
