When The Beiping Radio was cracked and Chen Brei's daughter and son-in-law were arrested one after another, how did this top-secret agent who single-handedly reversed the situation in the northeast escape victoriously?

Zhao Wei, dressed in the uniform of the People's Liberation Army

Among the workers on the secret front of the Chinese Communist Party, there are many legendary agents who lurk inside the enemy, maneuvering with wit and boldness, attacking the enemy while protecting themselves, and obtaining classified information. They are known as "people who walk on the tip of a knife." The story we are going to tell today is that of a secret worker of our Party. He was appointed by the CPC Central Committee to go undercover at the top of the Northeast Headquarters of the Kuomintang Army, and was personally awarded the secret code name "902" by the "Secret Agent King" Li Kenong.

Underground intelligence networks were compromised

Chiang Kai-shek was very disappointed with Du Yuming's performance in the northeast battlefield. In July 1947, Chiang Kai-shek dismissed Du Yuming on the grounds that he had relapsed from his old illness and needed to leave his post to go to Shanghai for medical treatment, and arranged for Chen Cheng, chief of staff, to take over. Before Chen Cheng arrived, Zheng Dongguo acted as commander-in-chief.

In order to welcome Chen Cheng's arrival, Zheng Dongguo ordered the General Staff Office to formulate a "Northeast Key Defense Plan": adjust the deployment of troops at various strategic points and divide the defensive areas. Ensure the strategic points of Changchun, Jilin, Siping, Shenyang, Fushun, Haicheng, Yingkou, Jinzhou, Huludao, Jinxi, Chifeng and other strategic points, build permanent fortifications, reserve grain and ammunition, and make long-term plans for holding firm. Three armies were transferred from Guannei to the northeast to ensure the smooth flow of the Beining Road. After the reinforcements arrived in Jinzhou, they reinforced the strategic points for the mobile corps and cameras. As the specific formulator of the plan, Zhao Wei transmitted the information to the CPC Central Committee in a timely manner through secret radio.

After Chen Cheng came to the northeast, he succeeded Xiong Shihui as the director of the northeast line, abolished the northeast security commander's headquarters, and combined the party, government, and military power of the northeast Kuomintang. He ordered Zhao Wei to report to Chiang Kai-shek in person in Beiping with his plan, and asked the Kuomintang Northeast Air Force for a special plane to escort Zhao Wei to Beiping. At 9:10 a.m. on October 8, Zhao Wei arrived at Jinzhou Airport. He took out Chen Cheng's order and found the air force station chief. After seeing the order, the air force station commander said: "Chairman Jiang will fly to Shenyang today, and you should go to Beipingbai for a run. Zhao Wei replied, "Soldiers take it as their duty to obey orders. I had not received instructions from my superiors not to go back casually. Trouble the stationmaster to find a plane for me to fly to Beiping. This was The order of General Manager Chen. The station master then arranged a C-47 plane for Zhao Wei. After the plane arrived at Nanyuan Airport in Beiping, Zhao Wei did not immediately go to Chiang Kai-shek's official residence, but first went to Zhongnanhai north and south to meet his old classmate Ji Qiren. During the conversation, he asked about Zhu Jianguo's recent situation. Ji Qiren told Zhao Wei: "The CCP's radio station in Shenyang has been cracked, and Zhu Jianguo is an underground party and has been arrested. You and he are very good, you have to be careful. Zhao Wei was shocked in his heart and thought to himself: "The radio station in Shenyang has been broken, Zhu Jianguo has been arrested, where should I go to find the party organization in Beiping?" Have the party organizations in Peiping been destroyed? Am I exposed? He calmly said to Ji Qiren, "What? Zhu Jianguo is a Communist Party. Impossible, right? You have a good relationship with him, no one comes to you. Ji Qiren replied, "No one is looking for me." I have good intentions, and this kind of thing can't be touched. Zhao Wei immediately changed his mouth and said, "Thank you for your attention!"

Zhao Wei left Ji Qiren's residence and went to find Li Baocheng, a classmate who was the chief of staff of the lieutenant colonel at the Beiping Iron Armor Train Column Headquarters. Unexpectedly, Li Baocheng told him a more serious news: "I did not believe that Zhu Jianguo was a Communist Party at first, and I wanted to co-guarantee with my classmates in Beiping to rescue him from prison." Later, however, it was learned that the matter was much more serious, and in addition to Zhu Jianwai, the Baoding Sui Bureau also arrested Xie Shiyan, director of the First Division, Ding Xing, deputy director of the Military Justice Department, and Shi Chun, an intelligence staff officer, as well as Zhao Liangzhang, intelligence staff officer of the Beiping Air Force Command. Even Sun Lianzhong's lieutenant general Gao Shenyu Xinqing was arrested. I heard that a dozen people were arrested. After Zhao Wei listened, his heart became heavier and heavier.

In order to get in touch with the beiping underground party organization and pass on the important information in his hand, on October 10, Zhao Wei took a rickshaw and prepared to venture to no. 8 Kuzi Hutong on Baozi Street to find the intelligence officer Wang Xiao. Coming to the door of Wang Xiao's house, Zhao Wei did not knock on the door immediately, but pretended to pass by and looked inside. A man in a leather jacket suddenly burst out and shouted, "What are you doing?" Who are you looking for? As soon as Zhao Wei heard that something had happened to Wang Xiao, he asked wittily, "I am looking for Mr. Liu, does he live in the backyard?" The other party replied impatiently: "There is no surname Liu here." Zhao Wei deliberately asked, "Is this No. 7 Kuzi Hutong?" Go fast, go fast! It's number 8, you're looking in the wrong place. The other waved. Zhao Wei further realized that Wang Xiao had probably been arrested, and all the people who had contacted him before could not be contacted now. If these people are really arrested, then as long as one person defects and confesses him, the consequences will be unimaginable.

On October 12, Li Baocheng invited two good classmates to entertain Zhao Wei for Western food. During the banquet, a classmate also mentioned the cracking of Shenyang Radio and Zhu Jianguo's arrest: "This case has become a big trouble, and Zheng Jiemin, director of the Secrecy Bureau, personally supervised the arrest of those involved in this case, and I heard that more than 20 people were arrested. Even Yu Xinqing, a senior senator with the title of lieutenant general, was arrested. Chen Bray's daughter Chen Lian and son-in-law Yuan Yongxi were also arrested. I also heard that Chairman Jiang personally issued a Baoding Medal to the two small spies who had cracked the radio station and arrested them, and each awarded 10,000 yuan to the ocean. One of these two little spies was named Duan Yunpeng, and the other I don't know what it was called. This is truly groundbreaking!" In order to show the reliability of the source, the classmate also said: "It was a classmate of the Military Command Bureau who personally told me." ”

Witty escapes the trap of secret agents

At this point, do you want to stay or escape? Zhao Wei's heart was very entangled during the banquet. After some deliberation, Zhao Wei decided to believe that comrades would never defect and would never leave their posts unless they had to. So he ventured back to Shenyang. For the sake of prudence, Zhao Wei did not immediately leave for work, nor did he return to his own residence, but went directly to his fiancée's home to inquire about the situation. When he learned that no one had come to him yet, Zhao Wei felt that he might not have been exposed, but it was necessary to further confirm it. So he called the Operations Section of the General Staff Office, and unexpectedly, a self-proclaimed new Chief Lu answered the phone, and on the phone he eagerly asked Zhao Wei: "Where are you, why don't you come back to work?" In order to stabilize Chief Lu, Zhao Wei said: "I just got off the plane, I have a fever, and now I am resting at my fiancée's house. Zhao Wei put down the phone, and before he could even put on his coat, he hired a carriage and headed to the old city of Shenyang. When he arrived in the old city, Zhao Wei called his fiancée's house to test it. He envisioned several situations: if Chief Lu ke answered the phone, it meant that the Kuomintang agent had gone to arrest him; if the fiancée's grandmother answered the phone but spoke abnormally, it meant that someone else was present; if the grandmother spoke in a normal tone, it meant that the Kuomintang agent had not yet arrived at his fiancée's house. It was Chief Lu who could answer the phone, and repeatedly declared: "The chief of staff has an urgent matter to find you and asked me to drive to pick you up." He also asked, "Where are you?" Zhao Wei casually made up a few lies, quickly ran to the Hun River, crossed the Hun River, and temporarily broke away from the pursuit of the secret agents.

On October 16, Zhao Wei went to the 52nd Army Defense Zone of the Kuomintang Army in Jiguanshan, and as long as he crossed the Taizi River here, he entered the Liberated Zone. Just as Zhao Wei was preparing to cross the river, two Kuomintang soldiers suddenly raised their guns and shouted at him: "Stop! Zhao Wei was in a hurry and drank: "I am the staff officer of the entourage of the commander of the 52nd Army, and there is an enemy situation in front of me, and I am ordered to go to reconnaissance." Which part of you are? When the two soldiers saw Zhao Wei wearing the general's uniform, with a menacing look, they immediately replied respectfully: "We are from the local security team." The company commander saw that the commander was going to cross the river alone, so he asked us to come and ask. Zhao Wei scolded again: "The army is about to come to garrison, and I still have to cross the river to reconnoiter the terrain." What is the name of your company commander? Who told him to command you to come after me? The two soldiers hurried to compensate Zhao Wei. When Zhao Wei saw this, he ordered, "I am preparing to swim across the river." You've come just in time to find a boat for me to cross the river. The two soldiers hurried to find a boatman and escorted Zhao Wei across the river.

Zhao Wei crossed the Taizi River, encountered the People's Liberation Army's swimming sentry, and was immediately taken to the company headquarters. After revealing his identity, Zhao Wei was transferred one level at a time and sent all the way to the headquarters of the Liaoning Military Region, where he was finally confirmed, thus ending his "victorious escape".

Zhao Wei, who successfully escaped from the enemy camp, returned to the party organization and continued to contribute to the revolutionary cause. However, his identity has never been declassified, and many people do not know zhao Wei's legendary undercover experience or his great contribution to the cause of the liberation war. It was not until many years after the founding of New China that Zhao Wei's true identity was made public, and his friends, including his family, did not know his true identity and his experience of lurking within the Kuomintang, and only then did he know who the secret agent code-named "902" was.
