Sometimes manic and sometimes depressed

There is a mental health department in the hospital

Last year, 130,000 outpatient visits were received

Among them, patients with bipolar disorder account for more than 30%.

Hu Shaohua, director of the Department of Mental Health of the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, introduced that everyone is most often exposed to mental illnesses including anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, depression, and bipolar disorder. Jin Xiaoyu's diagnosis of bipolar disorder is a common affective mental disorder, commonly known as "bipolar disorder", compared to the more well-known depression in the diagnosis of the disease is an independent disease.

Bipolar disorder is not a low proportion of affective disorders. Professor Hu Shaohua said that the mental health department of his hospital received 130,000 outpatient visits last year, of which about 35% were patients with bipolar disorder. In the wards, the proportion is even higher, with "almost 60% of patients hospitalized for bipolar disorder."

People with bipolar disorder often move and switch between the extremes of mania and depression. Professor Hu Shaohua introduced that the patient's emotional state is characterized by instability, a period of time as a depressed state, but the symptoms are more serious than depression, the destructiveness is stronger, the risk of suicide and self-injury is higher; and a period of time will show manic behavior, emotional continuity is high, energetic, sleep demand is reduced, self-evaluation is elevated, there is a strong sense of mission. In this emotional context, patients often do not listen to the opinions and suggestions of others, become stubborn, irritable, and irritable, and as a result, there is an increase in reckless investment, overeating, impulsive consumption, etc.

"Although bipolar disorder is a phased episode that usually switches back and forth between two emotional states, in fact, most of the time, bipolar disorder is dominated by depressive episodes, accounting for more than half."

The disease tends to occur in adolescents

75% of the 15-19 age group

Bipolar disorder "favors" adolescents. Xia Yong, director of the Department of Bipolar Disorders at the Mental Health Center Affiliated to Zhejiang University School of Medicine (Hangzhou Seventh People's Hospital), said that patients are particularly concentrated in the 15-19 age group, accounting for 75%.

"Children at this age are in the puberty period, the hormone level in the body fluctuates significantly, coupled with the induced events of life such as the middle and high school entrance examinations and family emotions, the disease is more likely to occur."

According to the 2019 China Epidemiological Survey of Mental Illness, the incidence of bipolar disorder in mainland China has increased year by year, and the number of patients has reached 8.4 million, most of which are high in adolescents.

In the mental health department of the First Hospital of Zhejiang University where Professor Hu Shaohua is located, the proportion of adolescent patients is also high.

Jin Weidong, director of the Zhejiang Provincial Mental Health Center and a psychiatric expert at Zhejiang Provincial Tongde Hospital, reminded that from the upper grades of primary school and junior high school, it is the high incidence of bipolar affective disorder, and parents may find that their children are impulsive, love to lose their temper, drop things, are bored with school, etc. Once there are these situations, they should be vigilant.

It's not that you're "smart" because you're sick, but it's that you get sick to a certain extent

At present, the cause of bipolar disorder is not clear, but the three experts interviewed this time said that the disease has a lot to do with genetic factors. There are also studies that show that it is also closely related to biological factors, social environment and other factors.
