The film is based on a true experience in Whiche Nakahara and Mai, who live in Okayama Prefecture, Japan, are a couple who successfully proposed marriage on the second anniversary of their relationship. Preparing to get married in March 2007, Mai suddenly fell ill with a rare disease "anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis" and fell into a long coma.
When Mai was bedridden, her family told Shangzhi to try to find other girls, but Shangzhi did not give up his insistence. He said: "I never thought of returning to the life of an ordinary person by myself, although the chances were slim, but as long as I could see her get better every day, I never felt how long 8 years were."
Shangzhi has been guarding her, and after 8 years of coma, Mai finally woke up and held a wedding ceremony in December 2014. The wedding video was also posted on Youtube, which touched many people. The story was later written into a novel, titled "The Bride After Eight Years, If You Wake Up," which was published in 2015.
