rare! The 11-year-old boy can stand and fall asleep, and when he checks, he has this disease...

I fell asleep while I was in class

I also sleep during the exam

Sometimes I even sleep while standing

……

Wenzhou 11-year-old boy Xiao Wei (pseudonym)

Because of daytime sleepiness, the results plummeted

The pain of falling asleep anytime, anywhere

Xiao Wei is a fifth-grade boy. From the fourth grade onwards, he often fell asleep in class and several times in the exam room.

"It's been really painful for more than a year, I always slept unconsciously, the teachers thought I was making trouble, my parents thought I didn't sleep at night." Referring to his daytime sleepiness, Xiao Wei, an 11-year-old boy, bluntly said that he was very unhappy.

At first, his parents mistakenly thought that he was lazy and loved to sleep, and he never paid attention to it. Later, he gradually developed to the point that he would fall asleep uncontrollably in each class, which affected his academic performance and attracted the attention of his parents.

In order to let his son go to bed early, Xiaowei's father told his child to go to bed and sleep with him at 9 o'clock every night, but the sleepiness state did not improve during the day. Parents found that Xiao Wei often woke up and screamed in his sleep, and the quality of sleep was very poor.

After several medical visits, the diagnosis was finally confirmed

The parents then took Xiao Wei to the local hospital for treatment, but a series of cranial CT, electroencephalogram and other tests showed no abnormalities. Doctors considered that it might be caused by "epilepsy" and treated it for a period of time. But the teacher feedback that Xiao Wei still fell asleep in class, and when he was serious, he would suddenly fall down.

This winter vacation, Xiao Wei's parents turned to Wang Ping, a doctor in the 24th ward of a third-class hospital in Wenzhou City. The doctor suggested that parents take Xiaowei for sleep monitoring. The monitoring results show abnormalities, suggesting that multiple naps were reported in 5 REM sleeps, which were positive for MSLT. Based on his medical history and examination, doctors diagnosed that Xiao Wei may have suffered from an uncommon disease - narcolepsy.

After a winter vacation of drug treatment, Xiao Wei's daytime sleepiness was significantly reduced.

Doctor: The cause of narcolepsy is not yet clear

Narcolepsy is a chronic sleep disorder characterized by irresistible daytime drowsiness, cataplexy, sleep hallucinations, sleep paralysis, and nighttime sleep disturbances. "Before receiving Xiao Wei, I had already received three or four boys with narcolepsy." Dr. Wang Ping introduced that patients with narcolepsy in the mainland are more common in primary and secondary school students, and men are more susceptible to disease. There are two peaks in the incidence of narcolepsy, one around the age of 15 and the other around the age of 35.

At present, the cause of narcolepsy is not yet clear, and the pathogenesis may be related to neuroimmune dysfunction. Wang Ping said that although narcolepsy is a lifelong sleep disease, it may be alleviated due to lifestyle adjustments. Parents and teachers should communicate in time to let children develop good sleep habits, such as arranging naps in a planned way during the day, especially naps, to reduce drowsiness. Pay attention to sleep hygiene, including regular work and rest, appropriate exercise during the day, not contaminated with tobacco and alcohol, and avoid excessive consumption of caffeine-rich foods and beverages.

For some children who love to sleep, do not simply think that they are "little sloths", and if necessary, they should go to a regular hospital for examination. For children diagnosed with narcolepsy, parents and schools should pay more attention and understanding to avoid accidents caused by cataplexy and to avoid psychological and mental stress caused by discrimination.
