Liudaopao Village, known as "Ten Thousand Birds Village" by villagers, belongs to the buffer zone of The Siberian Tiger and Leopard National Park, where the Hunchun Jingxin Wetland, where millions of migratory birds stop every year, and where other wildlife inhabit.

"Don't be nervous, Xiao Bai, they are here to help you." You have to obey, go with them, and I'll go see you. On the evening of January 11, in Liudaopao Village, Jingxin Town, Hunchun City, Jilin Province, Li Youde said goodbye to a red-crowned crane named "Xiao Bai" and then watched it being transported to a transport truck by several strong men from the northeast.

Li Youde is the first secretary of Liudaopao Village, and this red-crowned crane named "Xiaobai" does not know whether he is sick or left behind, and he stays alone in the village, and the villagers have been feeding it for more than ten days. Now, with the help of the Jilin Provincial Forestry and Grassland Bureau, the Jilin Provincial Wildlife Rescue and Breeding Center and the Hunchun Municipal Forestry and Grassland Bureau, this sub-adult red-crowned crane will take a 5-hour ride to the Jilin Provincial Wildlife Rescue and Breeding Center.

The red-crowned crane, which was tightly held by animal protection personnel, looked a little anxious. Li Youde looked at it struggling, a little distressed, "It seems to know that it is going to leave, it has never flapped its wings, but it shouted at me that day while flapping its wings." Before the red-crowned crane left, Li Youde, worried that it would be hungry on the way, fed it some small fish, and gently touched its slender neck to show comfort. Although he was a little reluctant to the red-crowned crane, he knew that only by going to the Wildlife Conservation Center could "Xiao bai" get more professional care.

The "crane" visiting the villagers took good care of them before and after

At the end of December 2021, Liudaopao Village, at 43 degrees north latitude, has entered the deep winter, the minimum temperature has reached minus ten degrees Celsius, and the fields are only the remains of the harvested corn stalks, covered with 10 centimeters of ice and snow, and the lake has frozen. The red-crowned crane herd has been out of the village for more than a month, but the early morning crane chirping has broken the tranquility of the village.

Villager Zhang Mingfu first spotted the "visiting" red-crowned crane, "which was lying on its stomach in the grass in the yard and looked very bad." Zhang Mingfu, who saw the red-crowned crane for the first time, was surprised and happy, "Can you not be happy to see the 'crane'?" We all say that this means that liudaopao village will get rich this year. But he also felt strange, why did a "crane" suddenly come at this time? Is it injured? And how to protect it?

Zhang Mingfu immediately called Li Youde, the first secretary of the village, the local animal protection center and other organizations. The next day, some experts came to hear the noise and installed an infrared camera near the "home" of the red-crowned crane. No one understood why it suddenly came to visit, perhaps it was injured, or perhaps it was left behind due to physical weakness during the migration. "At that time, experts said that they should first observe for a few days, and then study how to protect and deal with it." Zhang Mingfu introduced that in the days of caring for the red-crowned crane, almost every morning and evening he would go to the river to see it, afraid that it was frozen and hungry.

The villagers went to the lake to dig ice to catch fish to feed it

There were 49 families in Liudaopao Village, and soon the news of the arrival of the red-crowned crane spread throughout the village. Many years ago, villagers collectively rescued and protected a white deer, and this time, the experienced villagers took the initiative to set a schedule, every morning at 8 o'clock and 2 pm, the people on duty had to prepare food for the red-crowned crane on time. "If you feed it on time, it may nag you when the time comes, as if it is too late for you." Li Youde said.

"At the earliest, there was leftover bud rice from the people in the courtyard, and we picked up small bud grains of rice to feed it." Li Youde said that later, the big guys pondered that the red-crowned crane loved to eat fish, and then spontaneously went to the town to buy frozen dried fish for it. Eating dried red-crowned cranes with frozen fish has since become somewhat "disgusted" with bud grains of rice.

After 7:00 a.m., Li Youdehui and the villagers on duty took ice shovels and sacks to the lake to dig ice to catch fish. "Don't say that the frozen fish is dry, that is, some of the fish caught are dead and they don't eat it, so they have to eat live and fresh." Li Youde talked about this "little ancestor", helplessly showing love, "It is cute to eat small live fish, can't stop eating, just like melon seeds." ”

This red-crowned crane has become a household name in Liudaopao Village, and everyone will come to visit it. Yang Baisong, deputy director of the Jingxin Border Police Station, said that the red-crowned crane that has just arrived is a little timid, and the distance from people is basically maintained 10 meters away, "Now it is gradually getting acquainted, and the nearest time may be only 1 meter away." After a few days of careful care, the red-crowned crane's spirit is obviously much better than when it first arrived, "At the same time, we are also worried, if it is used to human feeding, what if it loses its wildness?" Yang Baisong said.

The environment is better "Ten Thousand Birds Village" is a rest home for animals

Liudaopao Village, known as "Ten Thousand Birds Village" by the villagers, belongs to the buffer zone of the Northeast Tiger and Leopard National Park, where the Hunchun Jingxin Wetland is located, and millions of migratory birds stop here every year, including red-crowned cranes, white-naped cranes, white-headed cranes, hong geese, white-fronted geese and so on.

Li Youde introduced that this place can become a "transit place" for bird migration and is related to the improvement of the environment. 30 years ago, the Longshan Lake Reservoir was established, and after the water was stored, the villagers gradually began to grow rice, and when harvested in the autumn, some of the rice spilled on the ground and became food for migratory birds. "What we're seeing is more birds, but actually there's more wildlife." Li Youde looked at the reeds in the wetland that were higher than a human, and sighed: "Siberian tiger, Northeast leopard, roe deer, musk, wild boar... The wetland can provide more food, which means that its carrying capacity is increased, and the entire biological chain will gradually become complete. ”

Holding villagers' meetings, broadcasting broadcasts, and going from house to house to publicize and explain, Li Youde will always seize every opportunity to publicize the knowledge of protecting wild animals to villagers. "Don't look at the average age of the villagers in our village is 60 years old, and the awareness of protecting wild animals is stronger than anyone." Li Youde said that he has been thinking about how to turn green waters and green mountains into "golden mountains and silver mountains", and has planned to build a research base that will not only let children know wild animals here, improve their awareness of ecological protection, but also generate income for local people.

The red-crowned crane has been rescued for a week, and Li Youde now drives past the place where it once stayed every day, and will also take a look at it, "After reading it, I reacted, oh, Xiao Bai has been rescued." "Sending it away, every villager showed the same reluctance as Li Youde, but everyone knew that it could not stay here for the winter." This time, in the face of live wild animals, everyone learned how to take care of it, and also knew not to contact wild animals too much to prevent them from having the habit of relying on people. Li Youde believes that through the participation of the whole village in the red-crowned crane rescue incident, the villagers will pay more attention to the protection of wild animals and the ecological environment.
