At that time, books were precious resources, and the average annual purchase cost of the library was only 50,000 yuan, the books were closed and limited, and there were not many people who borrowed books every day.

The daily work is monotonous and boring, but there is a detail that Shen Hongmei remembers vividly. "The library card is processed publicly, only once a year, and the library is the most lively at that time." Shen Hongmei said. It is this detail that makes Shen Hongmei understand one thing, Jiaxing people love to read, but reading is not easy. With the help of the professional knowledge learned during the reading, Shen Hongmei and her colleagues used new technologies to put the original paper book catalog into the computer, and established a bibliography and reader information database. In 1999, Jiaxing City Library launched the city's first electronic reading room, which became the "window" for local people to contact the online world for the first time.

In 2003, with the help of modern information technology, Jiaxing built a virtual local area network of Jiaxing Library equipped with the Internet in various districts, counties and even towns and villages, realizing the sharing of point-to-point literature and information resources, and Jiaxing has also become a demonstration city of "National Cultural Information Resource Sharing Project".
