Peru investigates oil spills caused by tsunamis caused by volcanic eruptions in Tonga

author:Bright Net

According to Reuters, Peruvian prosecutors launched an investigation into a subsidiary of Spanish energy company Repsol on the 18th. Previously, a volcanic eruption in Tonga triggered a tsunami that caused a crude oil spill at a Peruvian oil refinery 10,000 kilometers away.

Peru's environment minister, Rubén Ramírez, has ordered the La Pampilla Refinery involved to identify the main spill points within two days and to collect oil affecting several kilometers of coastline within 10 days.

A black lump of crude oil can be seen floating in the sea waters that stretch for about 3 kilometers along the coastline, causing seawater pollution and the death of birds and marine microorganisms, affecting 3 beaches as a result. Rapam Pila Refinery said on the 16th that the incident was "limited in leakage".

The company also issued a statement on the 18th that it has deployed a containment barrier in the affected areas and is collecting crude oil according to regulations. The National Institute of Civil Defense said it had brought the leak under control. Ramirez reported on the 17th that a ship encountered unusually large waves when unloading crude oil to the Rapam pila refinery, and then an oil spill accident occurred. (China Daily)
