On January 20, the Ministry of Emergency Management held a press conference.

At the meeting, Su Jie, director of the Safety Coordination Department of the Ministry of Emergency Management, introduced the safety of gas safety in the mainland. The surging news (www.thepaper.cn) learned that the current mainland gas safety accidents have entered a stage of frequent and frequent occurrences. According to preliminary statistics, nearly 100,000 kilometers of pipelines in the country have experienced different degrees of aging.

Su Jie introduced that in recent years, with the rapid development of the mainland urbanization process, the scale of urban gas use in the country has grown rapidly, the gas population has exceeded 667 million people in the country, and the penetration rate of urban gas use in the country has reached 97.87%. However, at the same time, gas accidents occur frequently, and in 2021, gas accidents occurred in Shiyan, Hubei, and Dalian, Liaoning. The causes of accidents are mostly leakage or perennial corrosion of gas pipelines, as well as damage or improper use by third parties in construction.

"The occurrence of these accidents reflects that the current gas safety accidents have entered a stage of frequent and frequent occurrences." Su Jie said that the mainland's gas has entered a period of large-scale use, but most of the pipelines used are built 20 years ago, and the pipelines are aging and old, including the continuous expansion of new construction. According to preliminary statistics, there are now nearly 100,000 kilometers of pipelines in the country with different degrees of aging, "coupled with the fact that the construction standards at that time were relatively low, and the daily maintenance, maintenance, and update were not timely, and now the risk challenges in this regard are very large." In addition, some regions, departments and enterprises and institutions also have problems in implementing the main responsibility for gas safety.

Su Jie said that the Ministry of Emergency Response, together with the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development and other departments, has studied and formulated the "National Urban Gas Safety Investigation and Rectification Work Plan" to carry out the rectification of major gas risks and safety hazards. Su Jie revealed that in this gas inspection and rectification, the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development have formulated a special implementation plan for the renovation of the old gas pipeline network, and are currently stepping up to promote it.
