Compared with Western flogging, why did ancient Chinese officials like to "spank" at every turn?

One of the most common punishments in costume dramas is spanking (cane punishment), and the most commonly used line is "cane blame twenty", so when did the ancient cane punishment become popular? Who invented the cane? Today Xiaoxin will solve these two problems for everyone.

Question 1: Why is spanking (cane) popular?

Chinese medicine believes that the human body has hundreds of acupuncture points, which are distributed in various parts of the human body, except for the buttocks. There are basically no acupuncture points on the ass, so that spanking is the most difficult to beat people to death; second, the buttocks are all meat, and it is convenient to deal with them later. Cane punishment punishes the prisoner without harming his or her roots. Therefore, in ancient times, spanking was regarded as the first choice for execution.

The second is the influence of Confucianism. Since "deposing a hundred families and respecting Confucianism alone", Confucianism has gained the exclusive favor of successive emperors. Confucian etiquette and shame gradually became popular under the deliberate propaganda of the official. Exposing one's body in public is a shameful act, let alone taking off one's pants and being on the board. In this way, the officials of ancient times humiliated the criminals, causing great psychological harm to the prisoners, and then inflicting physical injuries such as rods to achieve the purpose of interrogation, and also played an exemplary role.

After talking about why spanking is popular, let's talk about who invented spanking?

Cane punishment (spanking) originated from one of the ancient five punishments, the punishment of flogging (chī), which was also one of the five punishments of the pre-Qin period. However, the scope of this flogging is relatively wide, and the buttocks, back or thighs can be beaten. Moreover, the use of flogging means that the offender commits a light crime or a punishment after the sentence is reduced, so there is basically no case of beating a person to death. It is worth mentioning that flogging is still practiced in 16 countries, but the torture device used is a whip, also known as flogging.

Flogging was completely turned into cane punishment (spanking) during the reign of Emperor Wen of the Western Han Dynasty.

According to legend, during the reign of Emperor Wen of Han, in order to better govern the country, he began to solicit strategies for governing the world. The orderers put a big ding on the street of Chang'an and posted a notice telling the people of the capital that as long as someone has a good idea of governing the country, they can write the idea on the bamboo and put it into the ding, and once adopted, there will be a heavy reward. Emperor Wen of Han also obtained many good policies for governing the country, and also selected a large number of talents.

However, one day Emperor Wen of Han received a very special bamboo letter, and the writing on the bamboo jane was very distorted, and it was not written by an adult at first glance. Moreover, Zhu Jian did not write any strategies for governing the country, but only wrote a story: a centurion in the Han Dynasty army was punished for making a mistake, and the result of the punishment was to have one foot cut off. But all the needs of this hundred families depend on him, and now that he is disabled, this family is finished. So the children (girls) of the family pleaded with Emperor Wen of Han to abolish corporal punishment and change it to other punishments that did not harm the fundamentals. After reading Zhu Jian, Emperor Wen of Han felt very reasonable, so he summoned his ministers to discuss the matter, and finally with the consent of most of the courtiers, Emperor Wen of Han abolished the "Five Punishments" of the Qin Dynasty and set up another five punishments, which stipulate that as long as it is not a crime of rebellion (rebellion, murder, etc.), corporal punishment cannot be used, and this new criminal law is also the later use of cane punishment, and it is stipulated that only spanking can be spanked.

In fact, the rod punishment did not replace flogging, the two existed at the same time for a long time, and they were not a punishment. During the Sui and Tang dynasties, the punishment of flogging was for 10 to 50, and the punishment for 60 to 100 was for cane, so the flogging was lighter and the punishment of cane was heavier. And after the Han Dynasty, the parts that were beaten were not only the buttocks, but also the back could be beaten.

The real cane punishment only began in the Song Dynasty, and since then there has been little distinction between flogging and cane punishment. The Song Dynasty's reform of cane punishment was subversive. When the cane punishment was first promulgated, it was not necessary to take off the pants, but from the Song Dynasty onwards, because the Song Dynasty had the emphasis of "punishment can not be a doctor". The group of readers felt that since they would not be passively tortured, there was no need to save face for others, and in line with the principle of "watching the hilarity and not being afraid of big things", they reformed the cane punishment, which made it necessary to take off their pants, both men and women. The song dynasty readers did not pay attention to the brain hole, harming the readers of later generations.

During the Ming Dynasty, zhu Yuanzhang, the eldest and rougher, did not care about what "punishment can not be a doctor", and the readers were expensive? He was not accustomed to the group of readers in the imperial court. Zhu Yuanzhang not only sentenced the doctor, but also could not fight on credit. When sentenced, it had to be beaten immediately, so there was also a court staff, which was punished to the extreme.

The so-called court staff is to take off their pants and spank in front of the civil and military officials in the imperial palace, and it is estimated that these important courtiers of the Ming Dynasty can hate the Song Dynasty's group of readers. As long as the emperor is willing, no one can run, and it is said that during the Jiajing Emperor's period, there was a spectacular scene of hundreds of people spanking together outside the palace.

The skill of playing the board also began in the Ming Dynasty, and by the middle of the Ming Dynasty, the eunuchs who were often responsible for playing the board had developed a good skill, as long as the beaten officials had money in place, they often looked very fierce, in fact, it was very light, it is said that after "heavy beating" 20 boards, the next day they can get out of bed and play. Similarly, if the money is not in place, there is also a festival with the nobles in the DPRK, a few boards down, you can make people open the flesh, after playing 20 boards, the light is half unsuccessful, the heavy is dead on the spot.

Upward and downward effect, the technique of playing the board in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties was even more pure. "Lift the dragon up and swing its tail, and turn over the next python", the board was copied up, lifted high, fell low, and hit obliquely. One on the left, one on the right, three hits the middle, and three times you can open the flesh. Moreover, the officials and lords in the lobby and the errand men responsible for beating people have secret codes, for example, pull down, fight! Then this board is just a symbolic fight, only hurting the skin and flesh, not the bones. But if you say pull down, hit hard! Then this board may be broken, and the flesh and blood will be blurred. What's more serious is that if you say, pull it down, give me a hard hit! Then this board is not good, light or half of the body, heavy or killed on the spot! Playing the board to collect money was an open secret in ancient times, and it was the enjoyment of servants and officials.
